Spray program instruction next Thursday

Fruit growers are being invited to a seminar to discuss new pesticides and new methods of application next Thursday, Feb. 5, from 8:30 a.m. to noon at the Brewster American Legion Hall. It's sponsored by Northwest Wholesale.

Speakers will talk about mixing and application of new sprays, differences in timing for application, using oils for pest control, new methods of controlling codling moth and updates on pest management transition projects.

Admission is free. Participants will receive at least three pesticide credits.

Senior center open house planned

The Brewster Senior Center will sponsor its annual Open House Sunday, Feb. 15, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Senior Center on Bridge Street. All interested Quad City residents, senior citizens or not, are invited.

Toddler exercise program at community center

Parents and their children 2 to 5 years of age are being invited to an exercise program for the little guys and the big guys at the Columbia Cove Community Center.

The "Toddler Exercise Program" uses tumbling, walking and jogging and exercise balls, among other things, to promote fitness in children and their parents. Classes are held Monday and Wednesday from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., said community center director Eddie Allen.

The program requires membership to the fitness center, $14 for three months.

St. Andrews Grange meets Tuesday

Members of the St. Andrews Grange will hold their monthly meeting next Tuesday, Feb.3, beginning at 6 p.m. with a soup supper. The business meeting will follow. All interested Grange members are invited.

Doll club looking for art and crafts vendors

The Okanogan Valley Doll Club members are looking for people who make dolls, doll clothes and doll furniture, doll quilts and quilts in general to participate in the club's annual doll show, scheduled for April 4.

People who make any kind of handcrafted doll items or who make quilts can reserve booth space, said Cheryl Newbanks, Bridgeport, who's one of the organizers. The registration deadline is March 20.

Solid waste council, snowmobile advisory to meet

The Okanogan County Solid Waste Advisory Council will hold its monthly meeting Monday, Feb. 2, from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Health Department Conference Room at the Public Services Building (the original Virginia Grainger School), 1234 2nd Street in Okanogan.

That will be followed by a meeting of the county Snowmobile Advisory Board from 7 to 9 p.m. in the conference room. All interested county residents are invited to one or both.

Ecology subject of First Tuesday program

Maintenance of the environment and its effect on the rise and fall of societies will be the subject of the "First Tuesday" program Tuesday, Feb. 3 sponsored by the Methow Conservancy.

"Dana Visalli, a naturalist and biologist, will talk about "Ecology and History: Why Societies Really Fail." The program will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Twisp River Pub; the pub opens at 6 p.m. for people who want to order off the bar menu.

Admission is free.

Solid waste council to meet Feb. 7

The Douglas County Solid Waste Advisory Board will hold its regular meeting Thursday, Feb 5, at 1 p.m. at the Douglas County Public Services Building, 140 19th Street NW in East Wenatchee.

Items on the agenda include discussion of the 2009 and 2008 budgets, programs and goals for 2009. All Douglas County residents are invited.

Orchestra, chorus sponsor annual 'Family Concert'

The Okanogan Valley Orchestra and Chorus will present the annual "Family Concert" Saturday, Feb. 7, at 7 p.m. at the Omak Performing Arts Center at Omak High School.

The concert will feature performances from the orchestra, the chorus and the student group Second Strings. The program includes classical music, pop and Broadway tunes, and music from the movies. Admission is $12 for adults, $10 for senior citizens and students, and $8 for youth 12 to 18 years of age. Children less than 12 years of age are admitted free if accompanied by an adult.
