Block watch meeting Feb. 18

Participants in the Rocky Butte Block Watch program will hold their regular meeting Wednesday, Feb. 18 at 6 p.m. at the Rocky Butte fire hall on Bridgeport Bar.

All interested persons, members or not, are being invited.

BRIDGEPORT

Chamber to meet this Friday

The monthly meeting of the Bridgeport Chamber of Commerce will be held this Friday, Feb. 13 at noon at the Quad City Eagles lodge in Bridgeport.

Topics to be discussed include plans for a "welcome package" for new Bridgeport residents and a separate "relocation package" for people new in town. All interested Bridgeport citizens are being invited.

Future of Bridgeport to be discussed at meeting

Bridgeport residents are being invited to talk about what direction Bridgeport should take in the future at a "town hall meeting" Tuesday, Feb. 24 at 7 p.m. in the city council chambers at Bridgeport City Hall. It's sponsored by the Bridgeport Chamber of Commerce with help from city officials.

The participants are looking for residents' "visions for Bridgeport" said Chamber president Charlene Knox-what kind of development residents want, beautification projects, events to promote the town and how all that stuff should happen. Chamber participants also are looking for people who are willing to take some of those ideas and run with them. "We need help. We can't do it by ourselves," she said. All interested Bridgeport residents are invited.

BREWSTER

Valentine's Day dinner, dance at Legion

The Brewster American Legion will sponsor a Valentine's Day dinner and dance on-well, Valentine's Day, Saturday, Feb. 14; the social hour begins at 5 p.m., with dinner from 6 to 8 p.m. and the dance following.

The menu features steak and prawns; true romantics can take advantage of the chocolate fountain and fruit. The price is $23.50 plus tax per person for the dinner and dance; people who don't want to eat but want to come after dinner and listen to the band will pay $5. Fred and Greg, from Twisp, will supply the music. All romantic Quad City area residents are invited.

Senior Center open house

The Brewster Senior Center will hold its annual Open House Sunday, Feb. 15 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the senior center, 109 South Bridge Street.The Methow Valley Mountain Men will perform bluegrass and country music; there will be homemade desserts and coffee. All interested Quad City residents are invited.

Hospital budget hearing Feb. 23

The Okanogan Douglas Hospital board will hold a public to solicit comment on the 2009 draft budget during the regular board meeting Monday, Feb. 23. The board meeting begins at noon in the conference room at the hospital.

Copies of the budget are available for review at the hospital's administrative offices; written comments will be accepted through Feb. 23.

All interested hospital district patrons are invited.

PATEROS

Drama Club raising money for spring production

Pateros High School Drama Club members will be taking orders for Krispy Kreme doughnuts through March 6; the club is raising money for the spring production, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Drama club members will be taking orders at the next three home games; doughnuts will be delivered March 6. The drama club will have "golden tickets" in random boxes of doughnuts; people who find the golden tickets get in to any performance of the spring play free of charge.

Informational coffee hour Feb. 17

Pateros School District patrons are being invited to ask questions about the upcoming "Health and Safety" construction bond proposal, and have a cup of coffee too, Tuesday, Feb. 17 at 8:30 a.m. at the Homestead in Pateros.

District superintendent Lois Davies will be on hand to talk about the $1.7 million proposal, which will go to voters March 10. The proposal includes money for a new heating/cooling system, a fire alarm and bell system, new kitchen equipment, some remodeling in the bus garage and remodeling in the grade school bathrooms.

Registration opens for 'Write on the River'

Advance registration is now open for the fourth annual "Write on the River" conference for writers and aspiring writers scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, May 16 and 17 at the Wenatchee Valley College campus in Wenatchee.

The conference will feature workshops on writing novels and screenplays, poetry and essays, as well as information on getting published, from finding an agent to alternative routes to publication. There will be book agents available to meet with a limited number of authors.

Jess Walton, an award winning novelist and non-fiction writer from Spokane, will be the guest speaker. Walton won an Edgar Award from the Mystery Writers of America for best novel and was a finalist for the National Book Award.

Registration is $110, with a $10 discount for people who register before April 16. People can get more information at the organization's website, www.writeontheriver.org.

Registration open for spray workshop

People who want to sign up for a workshop that will teach them how to calibrate backpack spray rigs must register by Feb. 20. It's sponsored by the Okanogan County Noxious Weed Board.

Actually there are a series of workshops; the session in Brewster is scheduled for Friday, April 3. Workshops will begin at 8 a.m. with a maximum of five people per session. If more than five people sign up, additional workshops will be scheduled throughout the day. Each workshop lasts about two hours.

Participants will learn how to calibrate the sprayers, practice calculating application rates and learn how to measure chemicals for their sprayer based on label recommendations. Participants should bring the sprayer and it must be clean.

4-H leadership training Feb. 23

Advance registration is requested for a leadership training course for new 4-H leaders, scheduled for Monday, Feb. 23 at 5:30 p.m. at the WSU-Okanogan County Extension office, Room 101 at the Okanogan County Courthouse in Okanogan.

Participants will learn about how to start and run a 4-H club, policy and procedures, yearly preparation for the fair and other topics. State 4-H officials require all new 4-H leaders to undergo training and be certified within their first year as leader.
