Hospital board to hold special meeting

The Okanogan Douglas Hospital District's board of directors will hold a special meeting Monday, Feb. 9 at noon in the conference room at the hospital in Brewster. A discussion of the 2009 budget, a review of the December 2008 and year-end financial reports and election of hospital board officers are the items on the agenda. All interested hospital district patrons are being invited.

PATEROS

Drama Club raising money for spring production

Pateros High School Drama Club members will be taking orders for Krispy Kreme doughnuts through March 6; the club is raising money for the spring production, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Drama club members will be taking orders at the next three home games; doughnuts will be delivered March 6. The drama club will have "golden tickets" in random boxes of doughnuts; people who find the golden tickets get in to any performance of the spring play free of charge. People who want to place an order or want more information can contact Joy McCulley or Nicole Province at Pateros School.

Informational coffee hour Feb. 17

Pateros School District patrons are being invited to ask questions about the upcoming "Health and Safety" construction bond proposal, and have a cup of coffee too, Tuesday, Feb. 17 at 8:30 a.m. at the Homestead in Pateros. District superintendent Lois Davies will be on hand to talk about the $1.3 million proposal, which will go to voters March 10. The proposal includes money for a new heating/cooling system, a fire alarm and bell system, new kitchen equipment, some remodeling in the bus garage and remodeling in the grade school bathrooms.

Senior Center open house

The Brewster Senior Center will hold its annual Open House Sunday, Feb. 15 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the senior center, 109 South Bridge Street. The Methow Valley Mountain Men will perform bluegrass and country music; there will be homemade desserts and coffee. All interested Quad City residents are invited.

Spray program instruction today

Fruit growers are being invited to a seminar to discuss new pesticides and new methods of application today, Thursday, Feb. 5 from 8:30 a.m. to noon at the Brewster American Legion Hall. It's sponsored by Northwest Wholesale. Speakers will talk about mixing and application of new sprays, differences in timing for application, using oils for pest control, new methods of controlling codling moth and updates on pest management transition projects. Admission is free. Participants will receive at least three pesticide credits.

Toddler exercise program at center

Parents and their children 2 to 5 years of age are being invited to an exercise program for the little guys and the big guys at the Columbia Cove Community Center. The "Toddler Exercise Program" uses tumbling, walking and jogging and exercise balls, among other things, to promote fitness in children and their parents. Classes are held Monday and Wednesday from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., said community center director Eddie Allen. The program requires membership to the fitness center, $14 for three months.

OVOC concert this Saturday

The Okanogan Valley Orchestra and Chorus will be performing their third concert of the 2008-09 concert season on Saturday, Feb. 7 at 7 p.m. at the Omak Performing Arts Center. The "Family Concert" is geared towards music the whole family can enjoy. Chorus Director Don Pearce has selected Haydn's "Gloria" and "An Admonition"; Raye and Jacobs "This is My Country" and Luboff's "Are My Trials" as well other pieces for this performance. Second Strings Director Roz Nau will be having her strings students perform a piece from Beauty and the Beast; A Russian Song from Tschaikovsky; two arrangements from Heather Zosel and a couple other uplifting dance tunes. Orchestra Conductor Terry Hunt will providing selections from Fiddler on the Roof (music by Jerry Bock); Grieg's "Wedding Day at Troldhaugen"; Bill Holcombe's "An American Celebration" and a self composed piece "Suite from the 12 Dancing Princesses". The orchestra even has a couple more to surprise their audience. Tickets are available at the door. They are $12 for adults, $10 seniors and students; $8 for youth. Children under 12 are free. Doll club looking for art and craft vendors

The Okanogan Valley Doll Club members are looking for people who make dolls, doll clothes and doll furniture, doll quilts and quilts in general to participate in the club's annual doll show, scheduled for April 4. People who make any kind of handcrafted doll items or who make quilts can reserve booth space, said Cheryl Newbanks, Bridgeport, who's one of the organizers. The registration deadline is March 20. Registration opens for 'Write on the River'

Advance registration is now open for the fourth annual "Write on the River" conference for writers and aspiring writers scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, May 16 and 17, at the Wenatchee Valley College campus in Wenatchee. The conference will feature workshops on writing novels and screenplays, poetry and essays, as well as information on getting published, from finding an agent to alternative routes to publication. There will be book agents available to meet with a limited number of authors. Jess Walton, an award winning novelist and non-fiction writer from Spokane, will be the guest speaker. Walton won an Edgar Award from the Mystery Writers of America for best novel and was a finalist for the National Book Award. Registration is $110, with a $10 discount for people who register before April 16. People can get more information at the organization's Web site, www.writeontheriver.org.

Registration open for spray workshop

People who want to sign up for a workshop that will teach them how to calibrate backpack spray rigs must register by Feb. 20. It's sponsored by the Okanogan County Noxious Weed Board. Actually there are a series of workshops; the session in Brewster is scheduled for Friday, April 3. Workshops will begin at 8 a.m. with a maximum of five people per session. If more than five people sign up, additional workshops will be scheduled throughout the day. Each workshop lasts about two hours. Participants will learn how to calibrate the sprayers, practice calculating application rates and learn how to measure chemicals for their sprayer based on label recommendations. Participants should bring the sprayer and it must be clean. People who want to register or who want more information can contact the noxious weed office in Okanogan, (509) 422-7165, or stop by the office, Room 102 at the Okanogan County Courthouse.
