Donation fund set up for Nancy Shenyer

A bank account has been established at the Wells Fargo branch in Brewster to accept donations for Nancy Shenyer, who suffered a disabling brain injury recently.

Donations are being solicited to help offset medical and travel expenses; Nancy is still an inpatient at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. She is continuing to improve, said her brother Jim McChristian, but will be a patient at Harborview for a while.

Open house for Fred and Verona Schnibbe this Sunday

An open house to say "au revoir" to Dr. Fred Schnibbe and his wife Verona will be held this Sunday, Aug. 10 from 4 to 6 p.m. in the basement at the Brewster Seventh Day Adventist Church, 14 Hospital Way.

Dr. Schnibbe opened his practice in Brewster in 1958, partnering with pioneer physicians Harold Stout and Harold Lamberton to open Community Medical Center. He practiced medicine for 40 years here. Fred and Ronnie Schnibbe recently sold their Brewster Flat home and moved to a senior living facility near their old college stomping grounds in Walla Walla.

All old friends, former patients or colleagues and anybody else is invited.

Fort Okanogan programs this weekend

People interested in ancient history-literally-are being invited to a program detailing life in the Okanogan Valley in the Ice Age Saturday, Aug. 9 at 1 p.m. at the Fort Okanogan Museum, about four miles north of Brewster.

Stacie Cearley of Central Washington University will talk about flora, fauna and climate change in the Pleistocene Era, when wooly mammoths roamed what would become the Okanogan country. Cearley has participated on two paleontological digs that uncovered wooly mammoth bones, including one she led near Salem, Oregon.

Certified firearms safety instructor Jerry Johnson, Bridgeport, will discuss and demonstrate gun safety Sunday, Aug. 10 at 1 p.m. at the museum. Johnson will talk about firearms, hunting and hunting etiquette and controversial topics including relationships between hunters and landowners. All interested persons are being invited.

Registration open for hunter safety course

Advance registration is being accepted for a hunter safety course scheduled for the week of Aug. 18 through 23 in Brewster. Classes will be held each weeknight starting at 6 p.m. in the basement at the Calvary Baptist Church; there is a Saturday class as well, with certificates distributed afterward. Jerry Johnson, Bridgeport, is the instructor.

Participants are required to attend all the classes to pass the course, and potential hunters under 18 years of age must pass the course to qualify for a hunting license. (But the course is also for any adult who wants to learn more about gun safety and safe hunting practices.) Tae kwon do parent meeting next Tuesday

Parents interested in enrolling their children in tae kwon do classes at the Columbia Cove Community Center this fall are being invited to a parent meeting Tuesday, August 12 at 5 p.m. at the community center in Brewster.

Organizers will talk about registration and membership in the community center, as well as detailing costs. All interested parents should plan to attend.

Bear Backers clothing sale Aug. 21

The back-to-school clothing sale sponsored by the Bear Backers, the booster group for the Brewster School District, was so successful that they're going to hold another sale Thursday, Aug. 21 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the commons and on the lawn at Brewster High School.

The Bear Backers completely sold out the first time through, said organizer Trudi Gamble. All Bear Backer gear backs the Brewster Bears, of course; all the new clothes conform with the dress code that will be instituted district wide when school resumes in late August. Along with free balloons for children, there will be hot dogs for sale for 50 cents.

Brewster class of 1978 plans reunion

Classmates and friends of the Brewster High School class of 1978 are being invited to a 30-year reunion Saturday, Aug. 23 at 11 a.m. at Walla Walla Point Park in Wenatchee. The day kicks off with a potluck picnic.

90th birthday party for Inez Wall

Family and friends are being invited to help Inez Wall celebrate her 90th birthday at an open house Sunday, Aug. 17 from 1 to 4 p.m. at Mansfield City Hall.

It's such a big party the organizers, Rhett Wall and family and Loretta Babb and family, are providing lunch. The organizers are requesting no gifts, just everybody's best Inez stories. People who want more information can contact Loretta Babb at 509-525-5171 or 509-879-1606.

PATEROS

Openings still available for swimming lessons

Children who live in the Pateros School District can still sign up for the second session of low-cost swimming lessons, which are scheduled for next week, Monday, Aug. 11 through Friday, Aug. 15 at the Brewster Swimming Pool. Children can catch the bus at Pateros School at 8:30 a.m. each day; participants eat lunch at the Columbia Cove Community Center before returning to Pateros School at about 11:30 a.m.

Lessons are $10 for the week, with a limit of $20 per family, or parents can volunteer to act as a chaperone one day, said Tracy Colter, president of the Pateros Parent Teacher Organization. If parents volunteer the lessons are free. Registration forms are available at the Pateros Public Library and the Pateros Post Office. Dragon boat information meeting Aug. 13

Everybody in the Quad City area who's interested in organizing a dragon boat team is being invited to an information meeting Wednesday, Aug. 13 at 7 p.m. in Pateros Memorial Park.

Dragon boats made their Quad City debut at the Apple Pie Jamboree this summer; 20 rowers-whoops, paddlers-to a boat, plus a drummer to keep the beat and a steersman to keep the boat going in the right direction. Jamboree committee to meet Aug. 19

Members of the Apple Pie Jamboree organizing committee will hold a meeting Tuesday, Aug. 19 at 6 p.m. at Pateros City Hall. Participants will be talking over the recently completed jamboree and make some suggestions for 2009. All interested persons are being invited.

BRIDGEPORT

City hall to close early August 8

Bridgeport City Hall will close at 3 p.m. Friday, August 8 so city employees can participate in a Bridgeport City Council workshop.

Council members will review the city's nuisance and dangerous dog ordinances; they'll also discuss a possible graffiti ordinance and whether it's a good idea to have separate ordinances or combine them. As a council meeting it's open to the public; all interested Bridgeport residents are invited.

REGIONAL

Youth field day, lake cleanup Aug. 7 and 8

Interested young people are invited to learn more about wilderness navigation with the help of global positioning systems today, Thursday, Aug. 7 and to help clean up Palmer Lake near Loomis tomorrow, Friday, Aug. 8.

The navigation field day will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Leader Lake near Okanogan. Participants will learn about finding their way around the forest with the help of a compass, maps and GPS. Kids should wear good shoes that can stand the forest and bring a sack lunch; sunscreen is recommended. People who want to carpool should meet at the WSU-Okanogan County Extension office at 8:15 a.m.

The Palmer Lake cleanup is scheduled for noon to 3 p.m. Friday, Aug. 3; led by Anna Lyons of the Okanogan County Noxious Weed Control Board, the crew will be raking out and removing milfoil from the lake shallows. Participants should wear a swimming suit and non-skid shoes that can get dirty, bring water and a snack.
