Last program for 2008 at Ft. Okanogan this weekend

The summer history/culture series at the Fort Okanogan Museum wraps up this weekend, Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 13 and 14, with programs about Canada lynx and oral history.

Gary Koehler will talk about Canada lynx, its range and its niche in local forests on Saturday at 1 p.m. Koehler is a wildlife research scientist for the Washington Department of Wildlife. Lynx are rarest of the three species of wildcats in Washington, and stick mostly to the evergreen forests, he said.

Dr. Delores Cleary, a sociology professor at Central Washington University, will discuss "Legal Issues in Indian Country" at 1 p.m. Sunday. Cleary, a member of the Colville Confederated Tribes, will talk about human rights issues as they affect Native Americans. That will be followed by a presentation on "American Indian Oral Traditions" at 3 p.m. Sharron Connor, a philosophy lecturer at CWU, will talk about the practice of handing stories down from generation to generation.

The programs are free; all interested persons are invited.

Community Center open house Sept. 16

Operators of the Columbia Cove Community Center will hold an "Business Appreciation Open House" Tuesday, Sept. 16 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the community center. It's a way to thank business owners and residents "for all the support the community center has received," said manager Eddie Allen, and a way to show off the facility and its programs. Allen and assistant manager Cory Fortner will be available to answer questions and conduct tours. Refreshments will be served. All interested residents are invited.

Adult tae kwon do classes begin at community center

Registration is now open for tae kwon do classes for adults; classes are held each Monday and Wednesday beginning at 6 p.m. at the Columbia Cove Community Center in Brewster.

Community center director Eddie Allen said there also seems to be interest in a badminton league; matches would be played on Monday. People who want to register for the martial arts classes or badminton can contact Allen at the community center, 689-2994.

Lions Club meeting Sept. 25

The Brewster Lions Club will hold its monthly meeting Thursday, Sept. 25 at 6:30 p.m. at Camperos restaurant in Brewster. The monthly board meeting will be tonight, Thursday, Sept. 11 at 6:30 p.m. at Camperos. People interested in joining the Lions Club are invited to either meeting.

Club members are working on two projects, the annual Coats for Kids drive and the ongoing collection of eyeglasses. Lions are soliciting donations of new or almost-new coats for adults as well as children; coats are collected and sent to Spokane, and the Quad City area gets back an equal number of coats. The eyeglasses are collected throughout the year.

The local Lions will sponsor a visit of the Northwest Sight and Hearing Van Friday and Saturday, October 31 and November 1. People are eligible for sight and hearing tests, as well as blood pressure and other health screening checks.

PATEROS

Open house at Pateros School tonight

Parents of Pateros students and Pateros School District patrons are invited to the district's annual open house tonight, Thursday, Sept. 11 from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at the school. The evening kicks off with the annual back to school barbecue, followed by a meeting for parents in the gym at 6 p.m. Following that meeting parents and district patrons can talk to teachers and administrators and take tours of the building.

Driving safety class Sept. 24, 25

A driving safety class for people 50 years of age and older will be presented Wednesday and Thursday, Sept. 24 and 25, from 1 to 5 p.m. each day at the Omak Senior Center, 214 Juniper Street in Omak.

Cost of the class is $10. People can register at the Omak senior center, 826-4741, or by contacting instructor Keith Davis, 422-3787.

Emergency planning meeting Sept. 24

The annual meeting of the Okanogan County Emergency Planning Committee will be held Wednesday, Sept. 24 from 10 a.m. to noon in the conference room at the Okanogan County Sheriff's Office, 123 5th Avenue North in Okanogan.

Firefighters, law enforcement officers, emergency medical services, elected officials, health care workers, people who work with hazardous materials, are invited. The meeting is open to the public, and anybody with anything to say is invited to attend.
