Red Cross hosts blood drive

American Red Cross Blood Drive is 12:30 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 6 at the Cashmere United Methodist Church, 213 S. Division St., Cashmere. Appointments are encouraged, but walk-ins are welcome. Call 1-800-733-2767 for an appointment. Sponsored by Wacoka Kiwanis Club of Cashmere.

Future kindergartners invited to register

Kindergarten and preschool registration for students in the Cashmere School District who will be age 4 (for preschool) and 5 (for kindergarten) by Aug. 31, 2016, starts April 11. Parents are asked to pick up a registration packet at the school office, which is open from 7:15 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. weekdays. An open house to introduce students and parents to the school is set for 6 p.m. May 23.

'Friend of the Young Child' award nominations sought

Cashmere's Wacoka Kiwanis Club is seeking nominations for a "Friend of the Young Child" recognition award. Nominees are a person from the Cashmere School District (Monitor-Cashmere-Dryden) who has done much to further the health/education/welfare of young children. Wacoka Kiwanis of Cashmere will recognize the recipient at an award banquet on May 23.

Letters of nomination from the community should address the criteria (nominee must reside in the Cashmere School District; distinguish between job and volunteer activity time devoted to the health, education and welfare of young children; the number of children helped/influenced/affected by the recipient; complete description of activities the nominee participates in) and include a name to contact for acknowledgement.

Essential Oil Wellness event set April 9

A free "Essential Oil Wellness" event is set from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, April 9, at Icicle Village Inn, 505 W. U.S. Highway 2 in Leavenworth. Learn how to care for your family without toxins and chemicals in this educational class on health, wellness and proper uses of essential oils. A morning session is also set, from 10:30 a.m. to noon. Walking tour covers historic downtown Leavenworth

The Upper Valley Museum has scheduled a walking tour of Leavenworth's historic downtown on Saturday, April 9. Meet at 10 a.m. at the Upper Valley Museum, 347 Division St., Leavenworth. The tour will be 1-2 hours, a couple of miles on flat ground. Donation of $3 is requested. Wear good walking shoes. For information, call 548-0728. Kennel club offers dog temperament tests

The Wenatchee Kennel Club is scheduling dog temperament tests on Saturday, April 23 at the Rock Island Village at Rock Island Dam. Dogs must be at least 1 year old. Three tests are being offered. The "Dog Temperament Test" is administered by an evaluator from the German Shepherd Dog Club of Washington. It uses seven stations with various activities at each station. The other canine tests include "Canine Good Citizen," which establish the dog's ability to be well-behaved in public, and "Therapy Dog International," often required for dogs visiting nursing homes, hospitals, clinics and libraries to help humans in recovery, rehabilitation and other challenges. Wenatchee Area Genealogical Society meets

The Wenatchee Area Genealogical Society will meet at 2 p.m., Monday, April 11, at the Douglas PUD Auditorium, 1151 Valley Mall Parkway, East Wenatchee. The program is "A Fireside Chat with Wilfred and Rufus Woods." For information, call 884-6455. The event is free and open to the public.

Year of the Apple High School Student Art Contest underway

The Washington Apple Education Foundation (WAEF) invites high school students to participate in the annual Year of the Apple Art Contest. The Washington apple themed contest will grant more than $1,750 cash in student prizes. First place will receive $1,000, second place $500, and third place $250. Nonprofit grant writing workshop coming to Wenatchee and Twisp

The Nonprofit Practices Institute (a partnership of the Community Foundation of NCW and the Icicle Fund) is hosting "The Ultimate Grants Toolkit" - an interactive workshop to guide nonprofit organizations through the grant writing process, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, April 13, at Pybus Public Market in Wenatchee and Thursday, April 14 at Aero Methow in Twisp. Registration is $15 and includes lunch. Facilitated by Maryn Boess of Grants USA, this workshop is designed for new and seasoned grant writers, covering mission-centered grant-seeking, planning, research, and methods for writing a winning proposal.

SweetHearts for Kids celebrates 15 years

Celebrate the 15th anniversary of Children's Home Society of Washington's SweetHearts for Kids benefit luncheon, sponsored by Numerica Credit Union and Premier One Properties, on April 13 at the Wenatchee Convention Center, 121 N. Wenatchee Ave. Westside High School Principal Kory Kalahar will serve as the keynote speaker.
