Writers invited

to '4 Minutes of Fame'

Write On The River invites writers to share their work at 4 Minutes of Fame at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 10, at Milepost 111, 407 Aplets Way, Cashmere. Dan Gemeinhart, Cashmere resident and author of the middle grade novels, "The Honest Truth" and "Some Kind of Courage" will read from his latest book. Also reading will be Derek Sheffield, Leavenworth resident and author of a book of poems, "Through the Second Skin." Both Gemeinhart and Sheffield will also be presenting at the annual Write On The River conference May 13-15. For conference information and to register online, go to www.writeontheriver.org.

Free workshop offered on diabetes self-management

Attend a free Diabetes Self-Management Workshop at 5 p.m. Mondays at the United Methodist Church, 213 S. Division, Cashmere. The workshops will cover techniques to deal with the symptoms of diabetes, fatigue, pain, hyper/hypoglycemia, stress, and emotional problems such as depression, anger, fear and frustration, healthy eating, appropriate use of medication, working more effectively with health care providers. St. Patty's Day dinner and fundraiser

Wacoka Kiwanis Club of Cashmere's annual Corn Beef and Cabbage or Beef Stew Dinner is 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, March 13, at Vale Elementary School. Tickets for the dinner are $8 per person, $30 per family. Each ticket will earn one raffle ticket, plus raffle tickets will be for sale at the door for $1 each. All monies raised will be given to a local Cashmere family in need, to be selected by the Wacoka Kiwanis Club.

Make a bid for artist bowls

Handmade serving bowls created by Leavenworth area artists as part of the Empty Bowls Festival are going on the auction block from March 16 to 30 at www.uvmend.org. Bidding closes at 8 p.m. March 30. All proceeds benefit UV MEND's Community Cupboard food bank and community art grants for youth.

Aging and Adult Services changes governing board meeting

The March 2016 meeting for the Columbia River Council of Governments, governing body of Aging and Adult Care of Central Washington, scheduled to meet at 50 Simon Street SE, East Wenatchee, has changed from March 3 to March 10. All meetings begin at 1:30 p.m. Grant County Commissioner Cindy Carter is chair of the council, composed of one county commissioner from Adams, Chelan, Douglas, Grant, Lincoln, and Okanogan Counties.

Brinkman discusses the Pacific Crest Trail

The third presentation in the Wenatchee Valley College Speaks lecture series will feature sociology faculty Richard Brinkman and his hike on the Pacific Crest Trail. The lecture is 2 p.m. Thursday, March 3, in McArthur Lecture Hall, Wenatchi Hall room 2105 and via interactive television on the WVC at Omak campus in Heritage Building room 901. For those unable to attend the first event, a second presentation will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 10 in The Grove Recital Hall, Music and Art Center. Both events are free and open to the public.

Empty Bowls Soup Supper set for March 31

Celebrate the culmination of Leavenworth's Empty Bowl Festival, a fund raiser for Upper Valley MEND, at the Community Soup Supper March 31 at Cascade High School. The first seating is at 5:30 p.m. The second seating is at 6:45 p.m. For information call Upper Valley MEND, 548-0408.

Nominations sought for 'Bringing Hope to Life' award

Catholic Family & Child Services of Wenatchee is seeking nominations for its annual Community "Bringing Hope to Life" Award. The award is given in recognition of individuals from Chelan or Douglas counties who have made a significant contribution through volunteer work, employment or philanthropic efforts. Nominations will be accepted through March 2 and the award will be presented at the agency's Annual Benefit Dinner and Dessert Dash at 5:30 p.m. March 12 at Kuykendall Hall, St. Joseph's Catholic Parish in Wenatchee. Class offers handgun safety information

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office, in conjunction with the NCW Gun Club, hosts a handgun safety course from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday, March 26, at the NCW Gun Range, 2710 Gun Club Road, East Wenatchee. The course will be led by NRA certified handgun instructors and Douglas County Sheriff's Office firearms instructors. The cost is $10. Students must be over the age of 21 and have no restrictions to firearms ownership. The goal is to reduce the likelihood of injury or death by improper handling of hand guns, Douglas County Sheriff Harvey Gjesdal said. The objective is to educate citizens on proper handgun nomenclature, safety skills and proper techniques. A live fire portion will allow students to practice their safety skills on the range.
