Tickets on sale for Queen Cashmere pageant

Tickets are on sale now at Doane's Valley Pharmacy for the Cashmere Royalty Selection Pageant, 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 28, in the Cashmere Middle School Auditorium. Tickets are $10 for adults, $7 for students/seniors or $30 for a family of single residence up to six. Tickets also will be sold at the door. Red Cross extends 'heroes' deadline

The American Red Cross is inviting nominations from the community for the "Hometown Heroes" among us. Nominations will be accepted until Feb. 20. Heroes may be professional rescuers, ordinary citizens or local groups/organizations. Nominees must live in or have performed their heroic act in Chelan, Douglas or Okanogan counties within the last two years. Nomination forms are available by calling (509) 663-3907 or contacting megan.snow@redcross.org

The "heroes" selected by an independent panel will be honored at the annual "Hometown Heroes Celebration" on Thursday, March 24 at the Wenatchee Convention Center.

Longo signs books

Author Jen Longo is hosting a book-signing of her new young-adult novel "Up to This Pointe," at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 26, at the Leavenworth Library, 700 U.S. Highway 2, Leavenworth.

Singers wanted

Singers are needed for the Good Friday Cantata "Song of The Shadows" to be performed at 7 p.m. on Good Friday, March 25, at the Leavenworth Community United Methodist Church, 418 Evans St., Leavenworth. Rehearsals are Wednesdays, March 16 and 23 at the church. Song books will be available from 10 to noon Tuesdays through Thursdays starting March 1. For information call Carolyn at 548-0318.

First Baptist offers family movie night

First Baptist Church, 429 Evans St., Leavenworth, hosts Family Movie Night on the third Friday of each month. This month, the screening is at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 19. The movie - and popcorn - is free.

Registration opens for agriculture safety conference

Agriculture Safety Day, a full-day conference promoting workplace safety and health, is planned for Feb. 24 at the Wenatchee Convention Center, 121 N. Wenatchee Ave., Wenatchee. Agriculture Safety Day offers workshops focused on preventing injuries and improving safety in the, including special training on how to manage hazards associated with ammonia; dairy and livestock safety; tractor/ATV safety; and potential health hazards in agriculture. Participants can earn Pesticide License recertification credits from qualifying classes. Many workshops are in English and Spanish. Admission at the door is $70. Online pre-registration is $60 per person or $50 for groups of five or more. Student admission either at the door or through online registration is only $25. Lunch is included. Camp Fire's WoHeLo luncheon set March 2

Camp Fire North Central Washington's Annual Benefit Luncheon "Wild about Leadership" is Wednesday, March 2, at the Wenatchee Convention Center, 121 N. Wenatchee Ave., Wenatchee. Kelly Cordell-Stine, a wildlife biologist with the Chelan County Public Utility District, is the keynote speaker. The doors open at 11:30, with the event starting at noon. In addition to lunch, the event includes the presentation of the 2016 Trail Blazer Award to Carolyn Griffin-Bugert. The award is designed to recognize a community member for substantial and sustained service to youth. The luncheon is free, with the opportunity given to support Camp Fire mission and programs. All proceeds go to Camp Fire's after-school programs and Camp Zanika summer camp program.

Nominations sought for 'Bringing Hope to Life' award

Catholic Family & Child Services of Wenatchee is seeking nominations for its annual Community "Bringing Hope to Life" Award. The award is given in recognition of individuals from Chelan or Douglas counties who have made a significant contribution through volunteer work, employment or philanthropic efforts. Nominations will be accepted through March 2 and the award will be presented at the agency's Annual Benefit Dinner and Dessert Dash at 5:30 p.m. March 12 at Kuykendall Hall, St. Joseph's Catholic Parish in Wenatchee. PAC offers movies on the big screen

"The Princess Bride" will be shown at 6:30 p.m. March 16 at the Numerica Performing Arts Center, part of the 2016 Monthly Movies on the Big Screen. Tickets are $3 (or free to silver level or higher Numerica PAC Members). 

In the 1987 movie, a young boy (Fred Savage), home sick in bed, listens to his grandfather (Peter Falk) read "The Princess Bride," a classic love story centered around the adventures of Princess Buttercup (Robin Wright) and her one true love, Westley (Cary Elwes). Accompanied by befriended companions, Westley must rescue Princess Buttercup from kidnappers and the odious Prince Humperdinck (Chris Sarandon). The young boy's grandfather promises this story has everything: "Fencing. Fighting. Torture. Revenge. Giants. Monsters. Chases. Escapes. True love. Miracles."
