Volunteers sought for 'lockdown drill' May 17

The Bridgeport School District and the Douglas County Sheriff's Office are conducting two days of training drills to help school personnel and sheriff's deputies to respond to an intruder on campus. The drills will be Friday and Saturday, May 16 and 17; to help make it as realistic as possible, volunteers are being sought to play the parts of teachers and students on Saturday. The May 16 drill will test lockdown drills and related procedures, said Bridgeport Middle School administrator Jon Symonds, and will be district-wide but will be focused on the middle school. Saturday's training will be at Bridgeport High School. People who want to participate can contact Symonds at the middle school, 686-9501.

Bridgeport PAC meeting May 14

The Bridgeport School District's Parent Advisory Council (PAC) will hold its last meeting of the school year next Wednesday, May 14 at 6 p.m. at Bridgeport Elementary School. Boating education class to be offered at Chief Joseph Dam

Rangers at Chief Joseph Dam will offer two sessions of a boating education class for young people and adults on two separate Saturdays, May 17 and 24. Classes will be from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the project's commons building. New state rules require that all people 12 to 24 years of age who are operating a boat must complete a boating education class and carry the certification card with them while on the water. Over time that requirement will extend to all boat operators born after January 1, 1955. The law applies to all operators of motorboats of 15 horsepower or greater. But boaters only have to take one class; the certification card is good for a lifetime. The class, "Adventures in Boating Washington, a course on responsible boating," covers the basics of boat operation, according to a press release from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The fee is $10 and each class is limited to 20 people. Advance registration is required. Participants can register by contacting Mark Harris, 686-3541, and leaving a message; participants will be notified which class they should attend.

Kindergarten readiness class May 17

The third in a series of "kindergarten readiness" classes for parents of children entering kindergarten in the 2008-09 school year will be held Saturday, May 17 from 2:30 t0 6:30 p.m. at the Bridgeport Elementary School cafeteria. A barbecue will be held prior to class. Participants will discuss adjusting to different cultural backgrounds encountered at school. Parents of all potential kindergarten students are invited and encouraged to attend. People who want more information can contact Diane Hull or Lorena Monje at the Bridgeport School District office, 689-5656.

Corrected address for parade applications

Whoops. A misprint on the application form may mean misdirection for some applications for the Bridgeport Daze parade. Applications can be mailed to parade chair Pat Huff, PO Box 546, Bridgeport, WA 98813. Huff said she's continuing to look for people who want to walk, ride a horse, drive a car or golf cart or any wheeled vehicle, in the parade. Applications are available at the Bridgeport office of the Douglas County PUD or Bridgeport City Hall.
