Pateros Business Day/Safety Day May 3

Pateros business owners will take one Saturday to thank their customers; Pateros emergency service and public utility organizations will have information to promote safety during the annual Business Appreciation Day/Safety Day Saturday, May 3 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in downtown Pateros. The Pateros Chamber of Commerce sponsors Business Appreciation Day, while city officials sponsor Safety Day.

The Fire Safety House will be back in town for Safety Day; the fire safety house is a pretend house with an upstairs and downstairs that fills with pretend smoke. The idea is to show children how to plan escape routes and get out of the house in the event of fire. The fire house's visit is sponsored through Region Six of the Washington Fire Council.

Along with the fire house the Pateros Fire Department will have some of its trucks and equipment on display; so will the Douglas Okanogan Fire District No. 15 ambulance. The Douglas and Okanogan County public utility districts have been invited, and so have the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers from Chief Joseph Dam and the Okanogan County Sheriff's Office.

Traditionally businesses have specials, displays and samples along the downtown mall; businesses that aren't on the mall traditionally have displays and booths. The Pateros Public Library will have its annual used book and new plant sale, and school clubs traditionally hold fundraisers.

The Chamber of Commerce is providing free hot dogs, which will be cooked up by the crew at Yancey's Ace Hardware. KOZI Radio, Chelan, will be broadcasting live during the morning.

Planning group meeting tonight

The Lower Methow Valley Advisory Group will sponsor a meeting to let area residents see the fruits of their planning tonight, Thursday, May 1 beginning at 5 p.m. at the Methow Community Center (the old Methow School). Ultimately all of this information will be submitted to county officials as part of the process to update the county's comprehensive plan. The advisory group has finished its work, and residents can see the result next Thursday. The information must be submitted to the county by mid-May, said Lorah Waters, one of the facilitators.
