Vacation Bible School at Methodist Church

The Pateros Methodist Church congregation will sponsor "Power Lab" Vacation Bible School Monday through Friday, July 7 through 11 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the church, located at 124 West Dawson.

"Power Lab" has lots of science experiments and science information, along with games, Bible stories and discussions of "Jesus, the ultimate source of power," said Pastor Gary Smith. All interested children are invited.

Free women's tennis lessons, court time Thursdays

Two local coaches are teaming up to offer women's tennis lessons-or just the opportunity to play-in Pateros every Thursday, beginning at 5:30 p.m. at the Pateros tennis courts. Thursday night tennis is on the schedule for the rest of the summer.

Pateros High School coach Jennifer Stettler and Pam King, former Brewster High School tennis coach, will be on hand to help women of all skill levels.

Participants must provide their own tennis racket and a new can of tennis balls. Players are encouraged to bring used tennis balls to be used during drills. For the first few weeks, one court will be set aside for lessons, with the two others used for doubles play. People who want more information can contact King, (509) 429-6969.

Registration open for Jamboree three on three tournament

Registration will be open through Tuesday, July 15 for teams that want to participate in the annual Apple Pie Jamboree three on three basketball tournament, scheduled for Saturday, July 19.

Along with the basketball games, there will be a free throw contest, slam dunk contest and NBA two-ball contest at the end of tournament play. Registration is $60. People who want more information can contact Joey Bruno at Pateros City Hall, 923-2571.

St. Andrews Grange to hold year-end barbecue

The last meeting of the St. Andrews Grange before members break for the summer will be held next Tuesday, July 1 at the Grange hall. The evening begins with a barbecue at 6 p.m., followed by the meeting at 7 p.m.All interested Grange members are invited.

BREWSTER

Class of '88 plans reunion

The Brewster High School class of 1988 will hold its 20-year reunion Saturday, July 5 beginning at noon; classmates, friends, family, former teachers and staff are invited to meet at the Brewster Swimming Pool. That's where the festivities start; class members have rented the pool from noon to 3 p.m.

Along with the classmates who've stuck around the United States, class of '88 graduates will be coming in from Japan and Finland. A dinner is scheduled after the pool party, said Sabrina Webster, one of the organizers.

Registration day at Calvary Baptist School

Calvary Baptist Christian School will be open Tuesday, July 8 for parents who want to register their children for classes for the 2008-09 school year. Registration will be from 2 to 7 p.m. at the school, which is located at the church, 116 North Jay Street.

Legion benefit for Marj Udell June 28

A benefit dinner and silent auction for longtime American Legion Auxiliary member Marj Udell will be held Saturday, June 28 at American Legion Post No. 97 in Brewster. The evening begins with a social hour from 5 to 6 p.m., with dinner following. The menu includes barbecue chicken or pork, beans, corn on the cob, salads and dinner rolls. The auction will begin at about 8 p.m.

Udell is suffering from an extremely debilitating autoimmune disease; she's been active in the Legion and the community for many years, and the Legion members want to help her out now that she needs it, said Sue White, who's working on the dinner.

Legion members are soliciting donations for the auction; donations can be dropped off at the Legion hall or at Rains Contracting in Malott.

Donations sought for stock sale

Brewster FFA members are soliciting donations to the fund that supports local youths who will be selling animals at the annual Fat Stock Sale during the Okanogan County Fair. Both 4-H and FFA participants spend the summer raising animals for the fair; the animals are sold at the annual sale during the Saturday session. "Fair support" is a fund that allows students who do not make the minimum bid on their animals to receive at least the minimum price.

People can donate at the Wells Fargo branch in Brewster or by contacting FFA advisor Shane Bird at Brewster High School.

REGIONAL

Landfills closed July 4, 5

The central Okanogan County landfill as well as the transfer stations on Bridgeport Bar, Twisp and Ellisforde will be closed Friday and Saturday, July 4 and 5 for the July 4 holiday weekend. All four facilities will reopen for business Tuesday, July 8.

Conservation education

Members of the Methow Conservancy will sponsor a "Conservation Education Fair" Saturday, July 5 during the weekly Farmer's Market in Twisp; the market is open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and is held in the Twisp Commons.

Conservation information will include "fun, interactive, kid-friendly" booths and activities on wildlife, Methow Valley plants, farming, land stewardship and a number of other topics. People who want more information can contact conservancy members in Twisp.

County solid waste board to hold meeting

The regular meeting of the Okanogan County Solid Waste Advisory Committee will be held Monday, July 7 from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Health Department conference room at the Public Services Building (the old Virginia Grainger School), 1234 2nd Avenue South, Okanogan.

All interested county residents are invited.

Applications available for summer camp

Applications are now available for the annual 4-H Natural Resource Summer Camp, scheduled for August 12 to 14 at Camp Tokiwanee, six miles northwest of Bonaparte Lake.

Camp is open to 4-H members from Okanogan and Ferry counties; junior, intermediate and senior 4-H members are eligible to attend. Primary members are eligible only when a parent or guardian is a registered helper and at camp.

The camp will accept the first 45 4-H members from each county. The fee is $35.
