Derby beneficiaries include Senior Center, Boys and Girls Club

BREWSTER – In the wake of another successful run of the Brewster King Salmon Derby that held its 12th annual contest last August, derby organizers Lori Kratzer and Randy Moore are spreading the contributions around the city as they have done in years past.
On Oct. 10, Kratzer and Moore presented a check for $2,000 to the Brewster-Pateros-Bridgeport Senior Center, a gift that came at a good time for the facility.
“We really need the funds,” said Center President Kathy Lowry. “I think we will use that for helping defray the cost of our new roof next spring.”
Kratzer and Moore donated another $2,000 to the Brewster Boys and Girls Club and Director Brian Paine.
“We have also earmarked the same amount to the city of Brewster,” said Kratzer, “as they are planning to turn a couple of trees in the Columbia Cove Park into carvings similar to the ones lining the street in Bridgeport.”
The trees in question are two London Planes that border the west side of S. Seventh Street. Public Works Director Lee Webster recently identified both trees as suffering from an arboreal disease that will require the trees to be removed. At Webster’s suggestion the city council voted to prune the limbs and hire master tree carver Jacob Lucas of Bonney Lake, WA, to sculpt the trunks into works of art.
Council authorized funds to put up half the costs associated with the pruning and carving project and is raising matching funds, such as those from the Derby, to cover the remainder.
