Bears baseball team ready for another run at state

Made it to 2017 Elite Eight

BREWSTER – A young Bears’ varsity baseball team comprised largely of freshmen and sophomores made it to the Elite Eight in the state baseball championship last year. Now they are back for another season, following the loss of their only senior, Eric Martinez, to graduation.
The Bears are still a young team, with just a single senior on the roster this year. About half the team just came off the state basketball hardwood in Spokane with a fourth-place state trophy.
The Bears have their work cut out for them to exceed last year’s record, but most of those who made that happen are returning with a season of experience plus a “been there” look at what state competition involves.
Last year’s Central Washington 2B league champions finished 14-2 in the regular with their only losses to Lake Roosevelt and Liberty Bell.
In District 5/6 play the Bears defeated Kittitas but fell to Tri-Cities Prep to place second. After downing Northwest Christian, 8-2, in the first round of loser out play at state, Brewster lost to Colfax in the quarterfinals.
Brewster has made it to the state playoffs for the past four consecutive years and into the quarterfinals for the past three years in a row.
The Bears were scheduled to play at Okanogan on Tuesday, March 13, and will face Oroville in a doubleheader on Saturday, March 17. Brewster will host Bridgeport in its home opener at 4:30 p.m. next Tuesday, March 20.
