Bears hitting performance downs Raiders in doubleheader

Posted

BREWSTER – In what head coach Todd Phillips described as “one of our best hitting performances that we’ve ever had,” the Brewster Bears defeated Lake Roosevelt in a road doubleheader, 22-1, and 11-1, last Saturday, April 13.

“It wasn’t a walk fest, we really just drove in a lot of runs,” said Phillips. “Nineteen hits in a game is a lot and they didn’t make a whole lot of errors.”

Phillips said Joe Taylor started things off for early by leading off with a walk, stealing second and scoring on Corey Jarrell’s first double of the season.

Mason Kelly grounded out to advance Jarrell and Conner Ashworth drove him home with an RBI single up the middle. Ashworth then scored on a Sonneman ground out.

“We blew it open in the second,” said Phillips. “Kade Kelpman helped himself out at the plate by leading off with a single and stealing second and third.”

Kelpman had four steals in the second inning alone.

Cade Gebbers walked, and one run scored on a Taylor infield single while the other scored on an error.

“Jarrell walked, Kelly was hit by a pitch and Ashworth hit into a fielder’s choice to load the bases,” said Phillips.

“Quincy Vassar singled to score two and Sonneman doubled to plate another.”

Logan McGuire singled to score a run and Kelpman singled to plate two more,” said Phillips. “Gebbers singled to score Kelpman and then scored on a Jarrell ground out.”

“We continued with the offensive onslaught in the third,” said Phillips. “Sonneman walked and stole second and scored on McGuire’s single.”

Brewster added five more runs off four hits including Gebbers and Taylor doubles.

“Lake Roosevelt broke up the perfecto, the no-no and the shutout in the third,” said Phillips.

The Raiders finally scored on a double and Bears’ throwing error.

“The last of the scoring was done in the fifth when we added two more off of three hits including Taylor and Jarrell back-to-back doubles,” Taylor said.
