CHELAN – The Brewster Bears varsity basketball team tied up third place in the 2B District 5/6 basketball playoffs with a 66-49 win over co-league champion Oroville on Saturday, Feb. 16.

Brewster was coming off the previous day’s 67-55 loss to eventual District champion Kittitas while Oroville lost to Lake Roosevelt, 55-31 in the semifinal round.

The Bears won the game in the first two quarters of play by outscoring Oroville by a wide enough margin that near-equal scoring in the second half did not allow the Hornets to make up any lost ground. Five Bears scored in the first quarter to give Brewster a 15-7 advantage.

Joe Taylor, Isaac Baker and Ricky Vazquez had a solid second quarter and helped put 21 more points on the board while Oroville barely broke double-digits with 10. The 19-point 36-17 lead sustained the Bears through the second half when the Hornets outscored Brewster by a point in both the third and fourth quarters.

Taylor, Baker, Cade Gebbers and Connor Ashworth all hit in double figures in the win. Anthony Jamison and Spencer Martin led Oroville with 14 and 13 points respectively. Brewster and Oroville ended the regular season with matching 14-2 records to share the Central Washington 2B League championship.

In other District 5/6 playoff action, Kittitas downed Lake Roosevelt, 65-48 for the District title. White Swan edged Tri-Cities Prep, 53-30 for fifth place.

The Bears with a Rating Percentage Index (RPI) ranking of No. 5, play in Regional competition on Friday, Feb. 22, at a time and place to be determined.
