Bears slice through Trojans in two five-inning games

BREWSTER -- The Bears senior varsity players made good account of themselves on their final home game, a Senior Night doubleheader against Manson last Saturday, April 27. Brewster allowed little offense from the Trojans along the way to a 17-1 win in the first game followed by 23-3 in the second.

Brewster head coach Todd Phillips said he is going to miss his senior team leaders.

“Quincy Vassar was an integral piece of our state championship run and continues to be an important cog in the machine,” said Phillips. “Joe Taylor, Jeff Sonneman and Isaac Baker started playing on my legion team in seventh grade and have taken part in over 100 high school baseball wins.”

Both games were played in less than ideal weather conditions with winds blowing over 20 miles per hour at times.

Phillips said the first game represented one of his team’s better hitting performances of the season.

“Kade (Kelpman) did a great job on the mound,” said Phillips. “We let some seniors play some positions they don’t typically play so that required him to be very efficient.  He worked fast and pumped strikes.”

For the game, Taylor hit eight doubles, Ashworth four, and Kelly three. Sonneman had three triples and Kelly one.

Game two was another strong hitting performance for the Bears, said Phillips, who lauded the pitching performance of freshman AJ Woodward.

AJ was stellar on the mound. I thought he pitched a great game, only giving up four hits and I am especially pleased with the fact that he allowed zero walks,” said Phillips. “He pitched to contact and trusted his defense to make plays behind him, which they did for the most part. AJ is going to be really good and you’ll be hearing that name here a lot over the next few years,” Phillips predicted.

Taylor connected on three triple-base hits and 11 doubles. Woodward had six doubles, Kelpman five, and McGuire four.

Brewster will close out its regular season with a DH on the road at Oroville on Saturday, May 4. District competition begins on May 11 at a place and date to be determined.
