Bears take a lopsided lead into early season competition

Posted

BREWSTER – While the Bears varsity baseball team remains one of only two unbeaten teams in the Central Washington 2B so far this season, the figures the 2017 state veterans have posted so far give some indication of the challenge their opponents face to pull out a win in the regular season.
In the 10 games the Bears have played to date, they have held their opponents scoreless in seven of them. Brewster has allowed a total of 10 runs while hammering their rivals for more than 100 during the same period.
With their tougher league opponents still ahead, the Bears may have to work a little harder to remain undefeated, but momentum is in their corner. The Bears only losses this season have been to non-league 1A Caribou Trail League opponents Okanogan in their season opener and Cashmere last Thursday, March 29.
While the Cashmere Bulldogs won the game by a run, 4-3, head coach Todd Phillips said, “this was one of the first games I have ever coached where I think we truly outplayed our opponent and hundred percent beat ourselves.”
Phillips called the Bears’ base running “atrocious” and game focus “minimal.”
While Phillips acknowledged that his players hit the ball well and his pitchers had good command of the game “we just ran ourselves out of innings and made too many errors.”
And the Bulldogs took full advantage of the mistakes.
Brewster got on the board first and early, said Phillips.
“Jeff Sonneman led off with a single and Joe Taylor walked, after a bunt miscue - which is something else we really need to get better at,” said Phillips. “Quincy Vassar singled to load the bases and Corey Jarrell drove in two.”
A base running miscue and an infield pop-up ended the rally, said Phillips, and Cashmere rallied to even the score with two unearned runs.
Brewster regained the lead in the second inning after Cade Gebbers walked and Turk Riggan doubled.
“Logan McGuire reached base on a fielder’s choice and Jeff Sonneman hit a sacrifice fly to bring a run in,” said Phillips. “A base running error brought this inning to a close as well.”
Cashmere rallied once again for two runs in the bottom of the fourth that would put a lid on the game.
The Bears host third-place Lake Roosevelt in a doubleheader starting at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 5.
