Bears top off Homecoming with 54-0 football win

BREWSTER – With their two toughest league opponents just ahead, the Brewster Bears varsity football team kept its undefeated Central Washington B-2B record intact with a 54-0 win over visiting Liberty Bell on Homecoming Night last Friday, Sept. 28.

The Bears got off to a fast start scoring five touchdowns and inflicting most of their damage on the Mountain Lions with 33 points in the first quarter.

Brewster throttled back with a single TD in the second quarter before Homecoming ceremonies took over the field at halftime.

Four couples, one each from the freshman through senior classes, comprised this year’s royalty field. They included freshmen Viviana Dorantes and Adam Najera, sophomores Miriam Garcia and Oscar Guzman, juniors Karina Martinez and Ubaldo Arellano, and seniors Betty Martinez and Ernie Nanamkin. The Brewster High School senior class scored highest in the week’s various Homecoming competitions and won king and queen honors for Nanamkin and Martinez.

The school’s Community Caring Coin Drive raised more than $300 and with donations came to more than $500 for the Brewster Food Bank.

Back on the field, the Bears scored touchdowns in each of the third and fourth quarters to close out the game.

“Gio Nila had a great game at tight end and running back,” said head coach Jake Johanson, “and Ernie Nanamkin played great for us at his safety position coming downhill making some tackles and snagging a pick 6. Arnie Arevalo led the team in tackles with 11.”

The Bears will take their 2-0 league record on the road to Manson on Friday, Oct. 5, to face the league-leading with a 3-0 record. Lake Roosevelt at 2-0 is the only other unbeaten league rival.
