Bears win home opener, 72-59, on remodeled court

BREWSTER – The undefeated Bears varsity basketball team collected its first home win on the high school’s remodeled gym last Thursday, Dec. 8, with a 72-59 non-conference over Liberty Bell. The home stand follows road wins against the Chelan C team on Nov. 29, and St. George’s, Dec. 3.

“Liberty Bell played well and as always played hard until the end,” said head coach Michael Taylor. “They have some skilled players, and their big guys play tough around the rim. Taylor said the Mountain Lions had a short basketball practice window after winning the state eight-man football championship the previous week.

“You can see we had difficulty finishing around the rim as we only shot 35 percent from two-point range,” said Taylor. “We need to concentrate more, but that shows they did a good job contesting those shots.”

Kelson Gebbers led the Bears’ scoring with 31 points. Reese Vassar also hit double figures with 12.

The Bears will only play Liberty Bell one time during the regular season on Jan. 20 on the Mountain Lions’ home court.

Brewster was scheduled to host Lake Roosevelt at 7:40 p.m., Friday, Dec. 16.
