The Pateros Holiday Classic

PATEROS – The Billygoats varsity basketball team gave up back-to-back losses against Manson, 60-48, and Bridgeport, 63-58, in the four-team Holiday Basketball Classic on their home court last Wednesday and Thursday, Dec. 27-28
“Lost to a good Manson team on their first day of our Holiday Classic games,” said coach Marcus Stennes. “Coming out after half time we were unable to find shooters which led to Manson having a 20-point quarter.”
The Billygoats were able to rebound to within nine points in the fourth quarter but ran out of clock before they ran out of fight.
“We struggled from the free-throw line missing one-and one-opportunities,” Stennes said.
When you are only trailing by single digits, those unobstructed looks at an easy two points add up fast.
“Manson's ball pressure also forced us to turn the ball over 30 times,” said Stennes. “We were led by Andrew Gonzalez with 18 points and Ethan Wall adding 11.”
Senior Logan Robinson hit the boards hard for 13 rebounds.
Pateros: 10-11-8-19  48

Sam Larsen: 2 pts 7 reb, 6 a.
Jeremy Piechalski: 8 pts, 3 reb.
Logan Robinson: 3 pts, 13 reb.
Ethan Wall: 11 pts, 3 reb.
Ethan Freels: 5 pts, 3 a.
Mustangs stampede
If the Billygoats had been able to rein in Mustangs junior guard Ronaldo Ubaldo just a little they might have found enough room to catch Bridgeport in the second game of the Classic’s doubleheader. But Ublado was the man with the hot hand as he found the net for half of Bridgeport’s 60 points on the night.
Coach Stennes said Pateros “played a competitive game against Bridgeport” but was only able to only get within five points late in the game.
The Billygoats committed 21 turnovers but came out on top in rebounding with 40 compared to Bridgeport’s 27. However, it was Ubaldo’s 31-point performance that was the key difference even with the 17 points each from Pateros’s Ethan Wall and Ethan Freels and had a couple shots to get closer but couldn’t connect. We struggled taking care of the ball turning it over 21 times but were able to win the rebounding battle 40-27. Bridgeport did a much better job shooting and we had trouble covering #21 Ublado who had 31 points.
“This completes a very competitive non-league schedule,” said Stennes, “and we look forward to starting our league opponents in the new year.”
Pateros: 11 27 39. 58
