Brewster baseball brings home third place state trophy

Posted

CENTRALIA – The Brewster Bears’ quest for a shot at the state baseball championship ended with a 2-1 to Asotin in the semifinal round of competition at Wheeler Field last Friday, May 24. The Bears had to settle for eventual third place with an 11-8 win over Rainier.

“This was a tough one to lose,” said head coach Todd Phillips of the loss to the Panthers. “(We) just ran into a pitcher who we couldn’t seem to get a break on.”

The Bears blew by Northwest Christian, 7-0, and Colfax, 11-1 on May 18, to reach the final four.

Asotin got on the board first with a run in the second inning before Brewster knotted the game with a score in the fifth.

Jeff Sonneman was hit by a pitch and got on base. A double off the bat of Cade Gebbers was enough to put Sonneman across home plate.

“No one really threatened for the next three innings,” said Phillips, “but we walked three guys to load the bases and with two outs made an error on a little squibbler ground ball and that was it.”

Rainier falls
While the Mountaineers put three runs on the board in the first inning, they were unable to capitalize on the fast start through the next five while the Bears caught and passed them by the end of the third. By the end of the sixth inning

Brewster had a commanding 10-3 lead that would withstand a three-run rally by Rainier in the seventh.

Brewster was one of only two teams to return to the state final four from last year.

“We said good-bye to a great group of seniors who leave with 109 career wins, five league titles, five appearances in the district championship including two titles, five state tournament appearances and a second and third place finish,” said Phillips. “We never finished lower than the top eight in the state.”
