YAKIMA – The Brewster Bears varsity basketball team split a pair of games with Toutle Lake and Hoquiam at the Yakima SunDome Christmas Tournament Thursday and Friday, Dec. 28-29.
Against the Toutle Lake Ducks of the 2B Central League, Brewster came out on the short end of a 47-40 game that could have gone either way.
The Ducks came into the tournament with a 4-1 league record and ranked second in the 2B Central. The Bears, undefeated in the Central Washington 2Bat 5-0 got a look at some tougher competition than they have been facing in most of the CW2B this season.
It was a better outcome for the Bears on Friday, Dec. 29 against 1A Hoquiam of the Evergreen League as Brewster found its range and game face and held off the Grizzlies 50-39. The Grizzlies came to Yakima with a 2-6 league record good for third place in the Evergreen.
According to the Brewster Sports Facebook website, the Bears were led by sophomore Kade Kelpman’s 14 points. Close behind were Joe Taylor and sophomore Corey Jarrell with 11 apiece with Isaac Baker and Felix Nava hitting for 12 points between them. Caiden Riggan closed the door with two points.
Brewster was scheduled to host Tonasket on Tuesday, Jan. 2, and travel to Bridgeport to meet the Mustangs at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 4. The Bears will be at Okanogan on Saturday, Jan. 6, and host Waterville-Mansfield at 7:30 p.m. next Tuesday, Jan. 9.
