Posted

BREWSTER – On the heels of two earlier weather cancelations, the Brewster and Mabton varsity girls’ basketball teams finally met in Champion Gym last Wednesday, Feb. 13, in the quarterfinal round of District 5/6 eliminations.

The Central Washington 2B League champion Lady Bears had little trouble handling the Lady Vikings, who came into the competition in fourth place in the Eastern Washington Athletic Conference. Brewster opened with a six-point 17-11 lead behind even scoring from Kim Nila, Anah Wulf and Sammi Emigh.

The second quarter mirrored the first with Brewster pumping another 17 points through the hoop while Mabton settled for 11. With a 34-22 lead going into the third quarter, the Lady Bears held Mabton to just four points while scoring 17 for the third time to widen their lead to a near-insurmountable 25 points.

In the final quarter, Mikenna Kelpman tripled up on three-pointers to score nine of Brewster’s 13 points ending in the 64-37 final.

Sammi Emigh led Brewster with 17 points, followed by Kim Nila with 13, Michaun Kelpman 12, Mikenna Kelpman, 9, Kelsey Ochoa 8, Anah Wulf 4, and Cynthia Sanchez 2.

The win advances Brewster to the District semifinal round against Lake Roosevelt in the Chelan Community gym on E. Johnson Avenue at 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 15.

Liberty Bell will face Tri-Cities Prep. in the other semifinal game in the Chelan High School gym on 215 Webster Avenue. The two winners will play at Chelan High School at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, for the District 5/6 title.
