Brewster breezes by Crosspoint in State quarterfinal match

Posted

BREWSTER – Behind a strategy of aggressive offense, the Lady Bears varsity soccer team kept the visiting Crosspoint Academy Warriors on the defensive during a 2-0 shutout in state quarterfinal competition last Saturday, Nov. 11.
With a shallow bench that allowed only one substitute, the Warriors did not have an answer to the pressing attack of the Lady Bears and spent most of the game defending its goal as Brewster repeatedly maneuvered for shots at their opponent’s net.
Senior forward Yalina Vargas lifted the ball over the head of the Crosspoint goalkeeper with 23 minutes remaining in the first half for the only score in the first 40 minutes of the game.
At almost the same point in the second half, senior midfielder Marlisa Garcia went one-on-one with the Warriors’ goalie and sank the second goal with 22 minutes remaining in the game.
Crosspoint seldom got the ball onto Brewster’s end of the pitch and when the Warriors did there was seldom more than one player to pursue the offensive while most of the team remained in defensive mode.
The win catapults Brewster into the semifinals against defending champion St. George’s at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 17 at Sunset Chev Stadium in Sumner. Early in the season the Lady Bears defeated St. George’s, 3-2, on Brewster’s home pitch Sept. 16.
Adna will play Life Christian Academy in the other semifinal game at 4 p.m. The winners will meet in the championship round at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 18.
