Brewster hands double defeat to CTL Chelan Goats

Posted

BREWSTER – Both Bears varsity basketball teams came through with impressive back-to-back wins over the visiting Chelan Goats of the 1A Caribou Trail League in non-league action last Saturday, Jan. 13.
Brewster guards Corey Jarrell with 23 points and Joe Taylor with 21 alone scored as many points as the entire Goats varsity to pace the Bears’ 64-44 win over the visitors.
Chelan was led by Quinn Stamp who pumped in 21 points and pulled down 13 rebounds. Teammate Connor Wilson hit five three-pointers, but it wasn’t enough to close the widening gap.
Brewster had a big third quarter, outscoring the Goats by 11 points.
“We had to navigate around some foul trouble early, but I thought we did a good job of battling through that in the first half,” said Chelan coach Jeff Pearl. “Unfortunately, we were careless with the ball and threw away too many opportunities. Our effort defensively has to be better in the second half.”
Helping out Jarrell and Taylor was Felix Nava, 11 points, Cade Gebbers, 3, Ramiro Rincon, 2, and Kade Kelpman, 1.
Brewster improved its record to 11-2 overall and remains unbeaten in league, 9-0. Chelan dropped to 5-9 overall and remains 3-3 in league
Brewster: 16-12-22-14  64
Chelan: 13-10-11-10  44

Lady Bears win
On the strength of a big second quarter that saw five three-pointers, four of those from senior Yvette Sanchez, the Lady Bears broke open a first quarter tie to cruise to a 58-36 win over Chelan. The Lady Goats committed some untimely turnovers that, combined with cold shooting turned a first quarter tie into a 35-14 halftime deficit.
Chelan battled back to outscore Brewster in the third quarter and cut the lead to 15 before a late Brewster run put the game away.
“Brewster got hot and we gave up a big quarter,” said coach Steve Nygreen. “We had stretches where we needed to make better decisions with the ball.”
While Nygreen said that he admired his team’s effort throughout the game, “we need to play mistake-free basketball for longer periods.”
Brewster was led by Sanchez with 15 points followed by Sammi Emigh with 14. Other scorers included Maret Miller, 8, Michaun Kelpman, 7, Marta Martinez, 6, Marlisa Garcia, Mikenna Kelpman, 2, and Kelsey Ochoa, 2.
Brewster’s next home games are against Liberty Bell on Thursday, Jan. 18, and Manson on Tuesday, Jan. 23.
