Bridgeport returns seven veterans to a young, building team

Liberty Bell, Brewster look tough this year

BRIDGEPORT – The Mustangs varsity baseball team opened practice on Monday, Feb. 26, with seven returning veterans that second year coach Jesse Macy is counting on to bring needed experience to his young team.
The Mustangs lost seniors Isai Acevado, Tano Martinez, Zackary Gonzalez to graduation last year.
“We have six sophomores, one freshman, and four eighth graders that are new to the program” said Macy. “Some of the players new to the program have prior baseball experience.”
Macy said that with more experience to draw on this year, he’s looking for his veterans to work with his new players this season.
Last year, 17 of the Mustangs’ 22 players were either eighth graders or freshmen. With so many young players Bridgeport found itself on the short end of all but three games in a 3-13 season.
“We’re still a young team,” said Macy, “but I’m excited to see what we’re capable of with returning players who showed so much growth over the course of last season, and some very energetic new players on the squad.”
Again this season, Macy expects Liberty Bell and Brewster will be Bridgeport’s toughest teams in the Central Washington 2B league. The Mustangs will squeeze in one non-league game against Omak among its regular Central Washington 2B league rivals of Brewster, Manson, Oroville, Tonasket, Liberty Bell, Waterville-Mansfield, Soap Lake, and Pateros.
Bridgeport will host Liberty Bell in its season opener at 11 a.m., Saturday, March 17.
