Catalina Martinez wins Heisman High School Scholarship

BRIDGEPORT – The Heisman Trophy Trust announced this month that Bridgeport High School senior Catalina (Cat) Martinez has been named a Washington state recipient of a 2019 Heisman High School Scholarship.

Martinez, a scholar-athlete who maintains a 3.97 grade point average (GPA) and carries a full course load through Wenatchee Valley College’s College in the High School program was named on Nov. 12 as one of more than 3,600 School Winners nationwide. She was selected from a pool of thousands of applicants who will graduate in 2020.

As a School Winner Martinez had the opportunity to compete to be a State Winner ($500 college scholarship), National Finalist ($1,000 college scholarship), or National Winner ($5,000 college scholarship). National Winners also receive a trip to New York to attend the 2019 Heisman Trophy Weekend events including the televised ESPN Heisman Trophy ceremony an 85th annual Heisman Dinner Gala. 

“The Heisman High School Scholarship continues the legacy of Wendy’s High School Heisman Scholarship, a program created in 1994 by Wendy’s founder Dave Thomas in partnership with the Heisman Trophy Trust,” a Heisman media release said. “Over the past 25 years the program has honored more than 600,000 of the nation’s most esteemed high school seniors and provided hundreds of thousands of dollars in college scholarships to students and more than a million dollars to high school academic programs across the country.”

High school seniors who want to apply for the Heisman Scholarship must have a cumulative weighted high school GPA of B (3.0) or better and participate in at least one of the 48 sports recognized by the International Olympic Committee and/or the National Federation of State High School Association an be a leader in his/her school and community. Catalina participates in cross country, basketball and track,” said Bridgeport school contact Jen Varrelman. “(She) is active in Bridgeport’s National Honor Society Chapter, B. Kind empowerment group, Future Business Leaders of America, and Future Farmers of America.”

Martinez finished 62 among 112 runners in the 1B/2B girls 5,000 meters at the WIAA State XC meet in Pasco on Nov. 9, and was selected for the 2019 Central Washington 2B All-League XC Second Team by CW2B coaches and athletic directors.
