lies varsity basketball team stands in a respectable third place, tied 2-2 with Waterville-Mansfield, in Central Washington 2B League. The first four games for the Bridgeport girls have been a see-saw as they opened the season with a close 33-30 win over Soap Lake, then lost, 33-16, on the road to Manson.
Back home the Fillies dropped a 53-29 decision to undefeated Tonasket before evening their record with a 40-27 road win over Oroville.
We “stumbled hard offensively Tuesday night (Dec. 5) at Manson,” said coach Stuart Dezellem noting that his team “just could never get any form of ball movement or control.”
Manson took a six-point first quarter lead and extended that to 13 points at halftime and never looked back.
Against a tough Tonasket team, Dezellem said the Fillies “got down early and did not recover.”
The Lady Tigers jumped out to an early 22-5 lead in the first quarter but then relaxed enough to allow the Fillies to outscore them in the second quarter, 8-6. That was s close as Bridgeport got as Tonasket hit double digits in the both quarters of the last half to pull away.
Against Oroville Saturday, Dec. 9, the Fillies “played a much better game,” said Dezellem. “We moved the ball well on offense and hit some great looks.”
Bridgeport freshman Karla Torres led all scorers with 16 points including four baskets from three-point range. Junior teammate Karina Craig canned three from three-point range for 12 points as the two Fillies outscored the entire Oroville team.
“Defense improved,” said Dezellem, “something that has been hurting us in the early games.”
Dezellem said senior Kaiden Morris “dominated the boards” pulling down 15 rebounds on the night.
The Fillies had 18 steals, said Dezellem but ended up giving half of them back to a hustling Oroville team.
The Fillies host Waterville-Mansfield at 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 15, in what should be a competitive contest since both teams share the same 2-2 league record.
