TACOMA – Brewster varsity heavyweight wrestler and state veteran Alex Garcia required three matches to claim the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association Mat Classic XXX first-place medal in the 285-pound bracket at the Tacoma Dome last Friday and Saturday, Feb. 16-17. Garcia saved his most dominating performance for the championship round where he held his Reardan rival scoreless in a 13-0 shutout that left little doubt over who controlled the heavyweight division this year.
Garcia, who placed fourth at state as a junior was ranked No. 1 in his weight bracket early in the season by the Washington Wrestling Report leading up to the state tournament.
Garcia got a first-round bye on Friday afternoon while his first opponent, Trevor Morris of Davenport, defeated an Ilwaco rival to advance to the second round of competition.
Morris made Garcia work for his victory, but the Brewster Bear came out on top with a 4-2 overtime decision.
Garcia advanced to the semifinal round against Seth Donaldson of Life Christian who had a fall and a 10-8 OT decision on his list of earlier wins. Garcia defeated Donaldson by a fall in one minute, 57 seconds of the first round to advance to the finals.
Garcia’s championship opponent, senior Hunter Dawley of Reardan, had scored a fall and an OT decision to survive to the title round.
