6 Bears on First Team

BREWSTER – For his third consecutive year, senior multi-sport athlete Joe Taylor has been named the 2019 Most Valuable Player on the Central Washington 2B All-League Baseball Teams. Taylor is one of six Bears named to the All-League First Team and two on the All League Second Team.

Other Brewster First Team nominees are seniors Connor Ashworth and Quincy Vassar, juniors Corey Jarrell and Kade Kelpman and sophomore Logan McGuire. Second Team selections are senior Jeff Sonneman and junior Mason Kelly. Head coach Todd Phillips won Coach of the Year honors.

Tristen Marden of Waterville-Mansfield made the All-League Second Team. A Shockers’ teammate Travis Prey was named Honorable Mention.

Bridgeport’s Manny Flores was also an Honorable Mention selection.

While Phillips said he is grateful for his team’s nominations he added that seven Bears merited First Team status.

“If you are going to make a team from our league that had to compete with other leagues and you picked the 10 best players to do so, you would take seven guys from my squad,” said Phillips. “If you are going to pick the next 10 there would be five guys from my team in that group.”

Phillips said he based his assessment on how his players performed against other All-League players from the CWB and other leagues.

As for Taylor, “he is going to be impossible to replace,” said Phillips. “I do expect one our guys to step up and win the award next year. We have some strong candidates and this is his fourth year on the First Team.”

Phillips said he thought Ashworth deserved Pitcher of the Year honors “but he didn’t pitch against many league foes and had to pitch in a majority of our challenging non-league games.”

Phillips acknowledged that Pitcher of the Year Peter Aspholm is a great player “but we put more runs on him in two games than Conner (allowed) the entire season against stacked competition.”

Each team is limited to eight players placed in All-League nomination.

As it turned out Phillips said “we got pretty much what we should have got. This was just an interesting year with the amount of talent in our dugout.”
