CHELAN – The Waterville-Mansfield Lady Shockers varsity basketball team threshed the Brewster Lady Bears, 48-37, on Feb. 18 in the Chelan Community Gym to capture the Central Washington 2B league championship and send Brewster into crossover bi-district play.
The Lady Shockers 11-point win was set in place in the first quarter of play when Waterville-Mansfield outscored their cold-shooting opponents 16-3 through the opening eight minutes and protected that point spread to the final buzzer.
Sophomore Ella Osborne scored all eight of her points in the first quarter before handing off the hot hand to junior teammate Alex Poppie who led all scorers with 17 points through the next three quarters.
Brewster’s Michaun Kelpman scored the only points for the Lady Bears in the first quarter and led her team with nine followed by Sammi Emigh with eight.
The Lady Bears trailed by 14 points at halftime and while they rallied in the third quarter to outscore Waterville-Mansfield by five, 18-13, they could not sustain the charge or close the gap any further.
The Lady Shockers finished their regular season with a 15-1 league record and routed the Lake Roosevelt Lady Raiders, 57-36 in their first post-season game on Feb. 15 before meeting Brewster. While the win sends the Lady Shockers directly to regional play, they met District 6 No. 1 Tri-Cities Prep last Saturday, Feb. 22 in bi-district competition in Quincy. The Lady Jaguars handed Waterville-Mansfield its first post-season loss, 52-35 to take the District 5-6 title. Both teams head to competition in Spokane on Feb. 28-29.
