BRIDGEPORT – The Mustangs varsity soccer team won when it counted with a 3-1 victory over Liberty Bell on their home pitch last Thursday, March 23.
Bridgeport took the early lead with scores that came close together in the first half of play.
Mustangs’ junior forward, Keven Cervantes scored in the 12th minute off an assist from sophomore forward Ramiro Espino to put Bridgeport up 1-0.
Two minutes later Bridgeport scored again when another Ramiro assist set up junior defender Hugo Santana for a second goal in the 14th minute.
Liberty Bell managed to get on the board in the 66th minute for its only score of the game. The Mountain Lions got 10 shots on goal but Mustangs’ sophomore goalkeeper Edgar Meza saved four of those and freshman GK Carlos Ruiz stopped one. Bridgeport got 14 shots on goal.
“It was a good win for our first league game,” said coach Gabe Gonzalez.
“We still need to work on some things,” Gonzalez said of his team’s on-field performance, “but they are learning and improving daily.”

Manson wins
The Manson Trojans brought a limited bench to Bridgeport for a non-league game, Saturday, March 25, but still managed to pull off a 2-0 win over the Mustangs.
Manson’s GK, Serafin Chavez, blocked some good Bridgeport shots on goal to keep the game scoreless through the first half.
The Trojans stepped up the pressure in the second half and scored their first goal with about 20 minutes remaining in the game. Manson continued to press and scored again off a corner kick with 10 minutes left to seal the win.
Bridgeport was scheduled to play at Tonasket, Tuesday, March 28.
Manson will be back at Bridgeport on Thursday, March 30, for a league match starting at 4:30 p.m. The Mustangs will host Okanogan for a non-league doubleheader starting at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 1.
