Mustangs corral league championship, look to Districts

Posted

BREWSTER – Last season, they were the District 5/6 soccer champions, but the Brewster Bears won the Central Washington 2B league title. This season, the Mustangs varsity soccer team took home the league trophy as it makes another run at a District title or higher.

On the Bears home pitch, Tuesday, April 30, Bridgeport opened the first half with a goal by Alexis Valdovinos off assists by teammates Ramiro Espino and Osvaldo Orozco. Yair Diaz put the Mustangs up 2-0 with a goal assisted by Christian Aguilar.

The Bears got on the board before the half with their first goal but could not keep pace with the Mustangs stampede in the second half.

Diaz made his second of three goals early in the second half off an Osvaldo Orozco assist. After the Bears scored for the second time, Diaz put Bridgeport up 3-2 off, Aguilar added another and Valdovinos closed the door, 6-2, with his score.

“They played well, passing the ball and creating opportunities to put the ball in the goal, as well as not allowing many opportunities for Brewster to score,” said team spokesman Chris Gonzalez. “The Bridgeport Mustangs Soccer team has worked hard, and the younger players have stepped up and competed strongly with our seniors.”

Bridgeport was scheduled to host Cashmere on Tuesday, April 30. Win or lose, the Mustangs are headed for the Wenatchee Apple Bowl on Thursday, May 9.
