Mustangs, Fillies fall in turn to Lake Roosevelt

Posted

BRIDGEPORT – In a game they needed to win to remain in contention for a chance at a post-season slot, the Mustangs varsity basketball team let one slip away to the visiting Raiders from Lake Roosevelt, 68-54, last Saturday, Jan. 27.
The win elevates the 8-6 Raiders to a third-place tie with Tonasket in the Central Washington 2B League, two games behind second-place Oroville.
Bridgeport dropped to seventh place at 5-9, a game behind Manson.
Both teams played close during the first half of the first quarter, but Lake Roosevelt’s six-point, 15-9 lead going into the second quarter gave an indication of what the remainder of the game was going to look like if the Mustangs did not force more turnovers or hit more of their shots.
The Fillies had an even tougher time against the taller Lady Raiders who took advantage of their rebounding strength and defense to turn possessions into scores. Lake Roosevelt held Bridgeport to single-digit scoring in all four quarters while hitting in double digits though all four to take a commanding 65-25 win at the buzzer.
The 9-5 Lady Raiders are chasing Liberty Bell for fourth place in the CW2B while the 2-12 Fillies are out of post-season consideration.
Bridgeport was scheduled to play the top-ranked Bears at Brewster on Tuesday, Jan. 30, and will host Liberty Bell starting at 6 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 1, to close out the regular season.
