Pateros, Bridgeport teams fall to non-league opponents

Posted

PATEROS – The Billygoats varsity football team put up a good first half fight but lost to a surging Cusick team 68-26 in the final two quarters of their first home game last Friday, Sept. 1.
The Panthers fielded a team of large players who wore down the Pateros varsity as the game progressed. Cusick led by only eight points, 28-20 at halftime but used their running game and two-point conversions to pile on the points through the third and fourth quarters.
Coach Marcus Stennes said his team “played a good first quarter both offensively and defensively but fatigue and lack of tackling” allowed Cusick to extend the score in the third quarter.
The Billygoats’ combination of quarterback Jeremy Piechalski to receiver Ivan Ceniceros kept Pateros in the game in the first half “but it just wasn’t enough,” Stennes said.
Piechalski connected on 12 of 30 passes for 299 yards. Ceniceros caught six of 14 passes for 149 yards and two touchdowns. Receivers Andrew Gonzalez (2-5) and Dan Rossman (2-3) each scored a TD.
Pateros will be on the road this Friday, Sept. 8, to play Tekoa-Rosalia.
“This week we are focusing on our defense and getting in much better shape,” said Stennes.
Bridgeport Mustangs
The Bridgeport Mustangs lost on the road to Chewelah, 2-0. No other game details were available at press time.
