Williams wins 100 meters at WIAA State 1B Track Championships

Prestegui shines for Bridgeport

CHENEY – The Bridgeport High School girls’ varsity track and field team won the WIAA State Track and Field Combined Championship last week based on performance scores from both regular and wheelchair/ambulatory athletes.

Bridgeport sophomore Joanna (Jo-Jo) Prestegui competing in the wheelchair division captured two first-place and two second-place medals that, combined with two eight-place finishes by junior teammate Yareli Palacio-Isidro, won the State Combined Trophy

Prestegui brought home first place medals with a personal record (PR) 100-meter time of 22.23 seconds and a PR throw of 63-feet, 5 inches in the javelin. Prestegui, also placed second in the discus with a PR throw of 53 feet, 1 inch and a shot put toss of 17 feet, 9.75 inches.

Palacio-Isidra finished eighth in both the discus and shot put. She also won the Sportsmanship Award for sharing her discus without being asked with an opponent who did not have one for competition.

Pateros sophomore Anna Williams ran a 13.13-second 100 meters final heat to win first place in that event. Williams, the only Pateros track and field athlete to qualify for state, also won second in the 200M, sixth in the 400M and 13 in high jump. Williams’ time in the 200M was 26.91 and 1:05.04 in the 400M.

Williams had a faster 100M second-place preliminary time of 12.87 but ran the final fast enough to beat the field.
Waterville-Mansfield sophomore Alex Poppie placed third in the long jump with a leap of 16’5.75”.

The Brewster men’s 4x100 relay team of Ricky Vazquez, Jose Nila, Ubaldo Arellano and Ernie Nanamkin finished fifth with a time of 3:35.06. Arellano also placed fifth in the high jump with a leap of 5’10”.

Bears senior Alfredo Nila won fifth in discus (120’8”) and sixth in the shot put (44’7.25”).

Brewster junior Karste Wright cleared the bar at five feet to place sixth in the high jump.

Brewster sent 13 athletes to the WIAA State finals, Bridgeport qualified 12, Waterville-Mansfield two and Pateros one.

The WIAA 2019 State Track and Field Championships were held from Thursday, May 23 through Saturday, May 25 at Roos Field in Cheney.
