BRIDGEPORT – Mustangs senior varsity soccer player Yair Diaz has been posting some eye-opening performances on the soccer pitch this season.

Diaz has scored 10 hat tricks in his first 11 matches this season, including two matches with five goals and three more matches with four goals. That is 38 goals so far on the season for an average of 3.45 goals per game for the Mustangs. On top of his scoring ability Diaz has six assists to his credit.

As a junior Diaz finished his season with four hat tricks in his last five matches.

Both Bridgeport Athletic Director Scott Darwood and head soccer coach Gabe Gonzalez have high praise for Diaz.

"Yair is a very talented player and a leader on the field,” said Gonzalez. “He is always encouraging his teammates to play their best and never give up."

“What he is currently accomplishing is truly remarkable and possibly even unprecedented,” Darwood added.

Under the senior forward’s leadership Bridgeport is currently 9-1 in league and 10-1 on the season elevating the Mustangs to first place so far on the season, said Darwood. The team has also earned an RPI of #7 in the 1B/2B/1A state rankings.

“We are a 2B school that plays here in North Central Washington in what is considered a fairly strong soccer league,” said Darwood. “Once post season begins, we are then paired with the 1A schools for the state tournament.”

The Bridgeport AD nominated Diaz to the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) as a State Athlete of the Week selection.

“Yair is extremely excited about the possibility of continuing his soccer exploits in college,” said Darwood, “and is greatly hoping to receive a tryout and a visit at CCS (Community Colleges of Spokane).”
