Exhibit open until Aprill 6, awards ceremony March 9

BRIDGEPORT – A pair of Bridgeport High School students were among 21 Regional winners from 14 North Central Washington schools in the 40th Annual Regional High School Art Show.

BHS senior Oscar Gomez and junior Alondra Jiminez placed second and third respectively in the Photography Division. Gomez’s entry, titled “Watch Out, She’s Coming” was also selected as one of the 12 Best of Show works. The Best of Show winners advance to statewide competition in Olympia in April.

The Art Show opened at the Wenatchee Valley Museum & Cultural Center last Friday, March 1, and the exhibit will continue through Friday, April 6. Regional awards will be presented at a reception from 1-3 p.m., Saturday, March 9, at the museum located at 127 S. Mission Street in Wenatchee. The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on the first Friday of every month with admission by donation.

Judging the entries for the 40th Annual competition were Wenatchee artist Martha Flores, Scott Bailey, artist and director of the Wenatchee Valley College Art Department, and Marcus DiSieno, artist and professor at Central Washington University.

“This is the second time in two years that Bridgeport students have taken two of the three photography awards,” said BHS art instructor Brad Skiff. “and also the second year one of these works had advanced to the state show.”

Skiff said both Gomez and Jiminez produced their work in his Photography/Digital Art Imaging class which emphasizes creative and technical approaches to photography and film making.

“The project which these students completed these particular works for was entitled ‘Compelling Image’ which stresses strong visual interest in the photo,” Skiff said.

The art show is sponsored through the North Central Educational Service District and partnerships with the state Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction.

The museum offers a variety of exhibits depicting life in North Central Washington dating from the Ice Age, including 11,500-year-old Clovis points discovered in East Wenatchee to household articles used in Wenatchee homes around 1900.

The 501(c)(3) nonprofit is housed in two historic federal-style downtown buildings that once served as the Wenatchee post office and annex.
