BRIDGEPORT –A weekend full of tournament softball filled both the Bridgeport High School baseball and softball fields concurrent with Bridgeport Daze, Saturday and Sunday, June 3-4.

A total of nine co-ed teams paid a $200 entry fee to compete for Upper and Lower Bracket bragging rights at the two-day tournament. Those teams included:
Henton Farms
Hurley
Dilligaf
Rooster Lollipops
Guns
CJs
Omak Valley Lanes
Fonseca
Scheller

Teams began Round Robin play at 8 a.m. Saturday morning, broke for the Bridgeport Daze parade at 11 a.m. and picked up the action at 12:30 p.m. Play was in accordance with Amateur Softball Association (ASA) rules that covered such aspects as strike zone, mix of male-female player/positions on both defense and offense and other considerations to even the playing field.

Unlimited home runs were allowed on the baseball field, but only three on the smaller softball field, but teams could “purchase” five additional homers at two dollars per in advance of the game.

A single elimination upper and lower bracket was played on Sunday to determine the champions.

The upper bracket winners were the Rooster Lollipops out of Wenatchee

The lower bracket winners were Guns out of Coulee Dam.

This year for the first time, the tournament included the Jerry K. Henton Sportsmanship Award in memory of the recently passed Jerry Henton. Tournament organizers, Joannie Hurley and Leah Pfitzer, invited Henton’s children, Andrea Pearl, Jared and Trevor Henton to help present the award. This year’s winner was Ben Bakken.

Pfitzer and Hurley, with help from the rest of the Hurley team, have run the tournament for the last two years. Volunteer umpires included Bennie Polvos, Ben Bakken, BJ Kaplan, Bobby Purkhiser, Jared Henton, Bryce Scheller, Jenn Taylor and Casey Goyn.

“Bennie has been the fulltime volunteer ump on the softball field the last two years and the others are players from other teams,” Hurley said

Proceeds from this year’s event went to fellow softball player Brandon Summers who is battling cancer and has accrued bills from traveling and treatments.

“With the tournament and generous donations from family and friends, we raised a total of $2,625,” Hurley said.
