Mansfield plans historic railroad museum move

Posted
The Mansfield Museum is moving a historic railroad building from the Mansfield Airport to museum property to bring historical awareness of the local railroad industry.

Several years ago the people of the Mansfield Museum came to the Port of Douglas County for funding a project to purchase additional property for the museum to use. Doug Provo said the Port helped the museum with the purchase of the original building being used for the museum and the purchase of additional property for the use of putting extra buildings on those lots. Now the museum has come back to the Port of Douglas County Commissioners and asked for help with the cost of the move of the historic railroad building, which includes a new foundation and set-up of the new site.

"When they came to us for a funding project, if it meets with our budget requirements and our stretgeic statement we give it a good consideration," Provo said. "This certain project has been in the works for the last couple of months.

The building on the property of the Mansfield Airport, owned by the Port, was left from the original spur line that was left there years ago. Provo said the building sits on the runway object free area and there has been a plan to move the building for some time.

"When the folks from the museum asked whether the port might be interested in contributing to that project to move the strucutre to the museum in Mansfield so it could be there as a reminder of the raileoad history of Mansfield we gave it some consideration," Provo said.

On April 9, the Port of Douglas County met in a regular meeting and spoke with museum representatives about the costs of moving the building. Commissioners agreed to contribute $4,000 worth in funding toward the $8,500 project.

"Mansfield is a community in Douglas County and the Port of Douglas County is county wide so when a certain community in the county approaches the Port with a project, which is a good for the economic developemnt of the partilcular community, we are happy to listen to that request," Provo said. "If its something that fits in the budget we consider that for funding."
