Bridgeport council swears in three members, gets down to business

Posted

BRIDGEPORT – Before the City Council could conduct any business at its regular monthly meeting on January 17, it had to first swear in three council members, so the votes would be official. Incumbent Jackie Hentges, Position 3, who also serves as Mayor Pro Tem, incumbent Matthew Schuh, Position 1, and new council member Anthony Jenkins, Position 2, took their oaths of office from city clerk/treasurer Judy Brown.
Members held a public hearing relating to efforts to recover city expenditures connected to property on 440 Tenth Street and discussed options to insure reimbursement if the property is sold.
Members also approved Resolution 18-01, pertaining to an increase in garbage collection rates that will be incorporated into the city fee schedule, and Resolution 18-02, Personnel Guidelines.
Ordinance 18-683 relative to regulations on junk vehicles in the city limits, is a topic that has been under composition and debate since last summer. Council member Matt Schuh requested that the issue be delayed until the February meeting so that absent council members Phil Lee and Sergio Orozco could be present to participate in the discussion.
Public Works Director Stuart Dezellem reported that some leaks in the city’s water system have been detected and need attention.
“We’re up to 50,000-80,000 gallons a day over normal,” said Dezellem “so we have to find the leaks in the system and get those worked on.”
Dezellem said he would hire a leak detection specialist in late February or early March to perform a system check.
