Okanogan County voters let their voices speak at the polls

OKANOGAN – With some 30 percent or 3,960 ballots left to be counted out of a total of 13,101 in Okanogan County, the results of the Nov. 6 General Election as of last Friday, Nov. 9, indicate some clear leaders.

Initiative 1631 that would have levied pollution fees on greenhouse gas sources failed both locally and statewide. Local voters rejected the measure by 71 percent and statewide it went down to defeat by more than 56 percent.

Initiative 1634 that prohibits new or increased local taxes on raw or processed foods or beverages won approval both locally and statewide. Local voters voted ‘Yes’ by almost 70 percent, while statewide the Yes vote was greater than 55 percent.

Initiative 1639 that increases background checks, age limitations, training, and waiting periods for sales and delivery of semiautomatic assault rifles was decisively rejected by almost 65 percent of local voters but won statewide approval by almost 60 percent.

Initiative 940 that changes standards on the use of deadly force by law enforcement and mandates violence de-escalation, mental-health, and first-aid training was narrowly rejected by 53 percent by local voters but passed statewide by nearly 60 percent.

Advisory vote 19 that repeals Senate Bill 6269 dealing with increased oil spill response and administrative taxes levied against crude oil and petroleum products, was approved locally by a 70 percent margin and 53 percent statewide.

The results will be certified locally and statewide on Tuesday, Nov. 27. A capital X is placed next to each winning candidate.
