Cherries theme at Senior Center

Posted

BREWSTER – In contrast to the sirens, tire smoke, music and other celebratory sounds coming from Main Street during last Saturday’s parade, the atmosphere inside the Pateros-Brewster-Bridgeport Senior Center was cool and quiet as preparations were underway for the Cherries Jubilee Dessert Contest later that afternoon.

Entrants dropped off their delicacies between 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. as three judges gathered from around the area to sample each dish and award points based on three criteria. Judges evaluated each dessert in three categories with a portion of 100 percentage points allotted to each.

Taste counted for half of the score, or a maximum of 50 percentage points and emphasized how well the primary element, cherries, came through.

Execution for 35 percent focused on the use of featured ingredients and how well they matched the intent of the contest.

Did the ingredients complement each other and were they well prepared?

Appearance counted for 15 percent.

Judging the entries were Alex Hymer, owner/baker at Sweet River Bakery in Pateros, Brewster City Council member Avis Erickson and Dennis Ferree, chef at Howards on the River in Pateros.

Of the three entries submitted, one from Millie Powell took the top prize with 42 points for taste, 35 for execution and 15 for appearance or 92 percent. Powell barely beat out second place, an anonymous entry that scored 43 points for taste, 24 for execution and 13 for appearance, or 90 percent.

Third place with 40, 33 and 10 points respectively for 83 percent went to Patsy Whitley. After the judging was completed, senior center president Kathy Lowry revealed that she baked the anonymous entry.

Those who attended the event had their patience rewarded with a sample plate of the entries.
