BREWSTER – Brewster Elementary School Drug Abuse Resistance Education or D.A.R.E. Program graduated 73 fifth graders from three classes on May 24.
Brewster Police Chief Nattalie Cariker reported that students from the fifth-grade classes of Mrs. Johnson, Mr. Tollfeldt, and Mr. Miller participated in the program with special awards given to a pair of students from each class for the quality of their D.A.R.E. reports. Winners included: Steven Baughman and Rubi Serrano from Mrs. Johnson’s class, Jonathan Boquin and Cynthia Chacon from Mr. Tollfeldt’s class, and Alexis Pamatz and Madelyn Sandoval from Mr. Millers class.
Bethzi Valdez was the D.A.R.E. Bool Winner for having the best book work.
D.A.R.E. was founded in Los Angeles in 1983 and since that time has expanded to include 75 percent of the nation’s school districts and 52 countries around the world, according to the official website, dare.org. The program’s mission “envisions a world in which students everywhere are empowered to respect others and choose to lead lives free from violence, substance abuse and other dangerous behaviors.”
Cariker extended special thanks to Brewster School District for funding the program and to Brewster Marketplace for donating cake and refreshments for the graduation.
