BREWSTER – School Superintendent Eric Driessen made a special presentation during commencement ceremonies for the Class of 2018 last Friday, June 8, when he inducted the latest member of the Brewster High School Wall of Fame.
The recipient, the late Sheryl Smith, was a 1975 BHS graduate who, in her 12-year career as a nurse midwife delivered almost 1,000 babies while also working part time at the Okanogan Family Planning Clinic for 10 of those years. Smith returned to Brewster in 1994. In 2015 she was diagnosed with cancer, but she continued teaching nursing students.
“Her dedication to her nurses and the people in our area are seen in her teaching efforts,” said Driessen in a tribute. “Sheryl’s final lecture was Jan. 18, 2017. She passed on Jan. 27, 2017.”
Smith loved music and acting, singing in the Okanogan Valley Chorus and serving on the Governing Board of Chelan Valley Players.
Smith’s mother, Betty Smith, accepted the induction certificate on behalf of her daughter.
“Betty’s husband was a doctor but tragically passed at an early age, leaving Betty to raise four children” said Driessen. “Sheryl was the oldest at 11 years of age and she has three brothers, Terry, Larry, and Jeff, who are here tonight.”
Sheryl chose nursing as her profession and the three boys chose medicine and today are practicing medical physicians like their father.
Betty served at the Brewster School District Secretary/Accountant from 1982 to 1999 in addition to raising four children.
“Betty dedicated her time and efforts to support the success of the Brewster School District, while raising four successful Brewster graduates,” Driessen said.
