Mansfield Playday 2018 includes annual Award of Merit presentation

Posted

MANSFIELD – Mayor Tom Snell made the announcement from the double-door entry to the Mansfield Museum: The town’s annual Award of Merit winner was Phyllis Massee. Since Massee was unavailable to accept the award in person, her daughter, Cathy Massee, a paraprofessional at Mansfield High School, accepted it on her mother’s behalf. Massee was also the guest of honor in the annual Mansfield Playdays parade that worked its way eastward up Main Street at 11 a.m.
During the award presentation, Snell made an appeal to the audience for donations to the museum’s Great Brick and Mortar Project scheduled to begin this fall. The building exterior needs repair and much of the cost is covered by grant and private fund donations, but an additional $2,000 is still needed to close the money shortfall.
A pair of Washington State Patrol troopers led the procession and carried the national and state colors. What followed was a mix of classic vehicles, royalty, a band from Brewster, motorcycles, wagons and trailers hauling an assortment of citizens, political campaigners, livestock, MHS alums, city fire engines and kids rushing about collecting candy thrown by the parade participants.
The route to the end of Main Street and back to the starting point took less than an hour, but the two-day Playdays celebration in the Town at the End of the Rails was just gaining steam.
The Lion’s Club Coin Dig, Book Drawing and Car Show Registration started at 11:30 a.m.
The newly remodeled Pioneer Hall held its Grand Reveal from noon - 2 p.m. and the beer garden with live music opened from noon to 4 p.m.
The egg toss competition debuted at 1 p.m. with tug of war and sunny sack races at 2 p.m.
Car Show winners were announced at 2 p.m. as the town settled down to get ready for the 7 p.m. theatrical play.
Sunday, June 10, featured the Ray Lillquist Memorial Shoot at the Sportsman Club just outside of town followed by a repeat of the theatrical play at 3 p.m.
