New playground wins city council approval

BREWSTER – A new playground, that will be located in the field north of the Brewster Boys and Girls Club, received funding and construction approval from the city council at its regular monthly meeting last Wednesday, March 14.
The estimated $38,800 installation has been a pet project of council member Avis Erickson who has promoted the new playground and solicited donors to replace old equipment on the site.
Public Works Director Lee Webster said the new footprint for the playground area will measure 100 feet by 50 feet and will include a concrete border filled with wood chips. Most or all of the chips are left over from tree pruning and chipping from last fall when Kile Tree Service from Wenatchee limbed a more than a dozen trees along with two London Planes that were later carved into park sculptures.
As to when the work actually begins on the new playground is another matter. Webster said public works personnel are already committed to completing several projects including the RV park electrical upgrades that take precedence over new work. While the completion timeline is indefinite, Webster said he hopes to fit the playground in by no later than this fall. Site work and installation is the only part left.
“The equipment has already been picked out,” Erickson said, and last week the council authorized the $13,000-plus dollars to purchase it.
When completed the playground will resemble a similar one installed by the PUD at the boat dock.
