This letter to parents was posted on he Pateros School Districts website yesterday, Monday, April 12.

Dear Parents,
A tragic event took place in Pateros this morning, and a high school student has died.
Secondary students have been informed and counseling was provided by our staff, Okanogan Behavioral Health, and counselors from Brewster School District.  Counseling will also be available every day this week If your student is in the  Gold Cohort and needs counseling, please send them to school tomorrow (Tuesday, April 13).
Transportation home for the Gold Cohort will be provided after counselingtomorrow.
Students will react to this tragic event with different emotions.  Please let students know that their feelings are valid.  It is very important for all of us to know  that  if anyone is not feeling well in any way to reach out for help. Suicide prevention information is attached and can also be found on our website.
During this critical period, health care officials advise spending as much time  as possible with your kids.
Elementary students were not informed by school staff.  As with the recent passing of a Pateros staff member your child may:
• Ask questions about death repeatedly.(especially younger children)
• Become angry or aggressive.
• Be withdrawn or experience mood swings.
• Be sad or depressed.
• Become afraid.
• Have difficulty sleeping or eating.
If your child wants to talk, the recommendation is to answer their questions simply,  honestly and be prepared to answer the same question repeatedly.
Please do not hesitate to let us know how we can help.
Sincerely,
Greg Goodnight
