Red Cross opens shelter in Brewster for evacuees

Unable to accept material donations due to COVID-19

BREWSTER  – The American Red Cross continues to monitor and respond to community needs created by more than a dozen wildfires burning throughout Washington State.

Our primary focus is on providing safe shelter and care to those immediately impacted.

Since September 1, we have provided 548 hotel stays and provided 1,450 meals and snacks to the individuals in our care.

On Tuesday night at 9 p.m., we opened a shelter at Brewster High School to support hundreds of evacuees. After serving 400 dinner meals, 91 individuals stayed at the shelter overnight.

COVID-19 has not changed the Red Cross mission, we are providing the same type of support we always have. To help keep people safe, we are following guidance from CDC and public health authorities — and have put in place additional precautions, including guidelines around in-kind-donations.

For the safety of our shelter residents and workers, the Red Cross is unable to accept material donations of any kind right now. Due to increased safety measures for COVID-19, storing, sorting, cleaning and distributing donated items could be especially risky.

The best way to help people affected by disasters like wildfires by making a gift to Red Cross Disaster Relief. Your gift is a commitment to helping people in need, and every single donation matters. Visit redcross.org, call 800-RED-CROSS, or text the word REDCROSS to 90999 to make a $10 donation.
