WSU specialist will address apple maggot presence in Okanogan County

Possible quarantine expansion

Posted
OKANOGAN – Tree Fruit Specialist Tianna DuPont from the WSU Extension Service in conjunction with the Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA) will host a meeting to discuss apple maggot quarantine and possible quarantine extension for Okanogan County via ZOOM at 1:30 p.m., March 3.

“In 2020, WSDA placed a total of 281 adult fly traps on host trees in the pest-free area of Okanogan County,” said Chelan-Douglas Pest Board spokesman Will Carpenter. “The exercise documented 69 positive sites that captured 471 adult apple maggots.”
Carpenter said WSDA also sampled hawthorn berries for at three positive sites.
“These sites yielded over 385 maggot pupa in red hawthorn in Okanagan County,” said Carpenter. “In accordance with WSDA policies, the finding of two or more life stages of apple maggot indicates a breeding population and initiates a need for expanding the quarantine in Okanogan County.”

Carpenter said WSDA representatives and the Apple Maggot Working Group want to discuss the pending quarantine with Okanogan County growers/shippers who are likely to be affected by this action.
DuPont’s meeting will address:
• Apple maggot finds in Okanogan County.
• What triggers a quarantine.
• What a quarantine means for growers and packers in Okanogan County.
•  Participant feedback, Q&A

The meeting will be available via conference call/web interface.
